    Neo-Post-Modern Rem Koolhaas?

Is OMA/Koolhaas trying to bring back Post-Modern or should we call this Neo-Post-Modern?
The new headquarter building of the dutch publisher PCM in Amsterdam will get an OMA design, according this article which is in Dutch. Can someone please translate what's going on?

Can someone please translate what's going on

on january 20th 2004 OMA has been comissioned to design the new headquarter for publisher PCM. (link)article 20.01.2004

The client wanted one building with a strong image for the now seperate offices of its different national newspapers: 25,000 sqm. and 50 metres tall.
Hereshttp://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afbeeld...rantGebouw.jpg a picture of the situation.

    - the styrofoam design presented is a scheme to show the concept and for mass study

    - the top part for the "newsrooms" that never sleeps, observing the city and being seen

    - the coloum part is for standard office functions

    - and the base should be maximized for public functions such as cafes, conference rooms, book shops etc.

    - no material choices yet. everthing should be as transparent as possible.

    - apparently this model proved itself in the windtunnel and in shading studies

    - it shall have typical OMA features such as carved out voids and folding floors

    - the facade of the top part shall double function as a news display

    whatever

Synops of half the article and comment

The design is in a pre-premature stage. But the outline of the building is surfacing. The office building is designed for PCM [a publisher for three major newspapers.] The editors offices at 50 meters high are the most recognisable element. The ground floor is a socle for a maximum of public activity like a bookshop, a journalist café, lobby's and meeting rooms but also activities for the context, e.g. students. "The building won't be a bastion, it has to find a link with the city."

On top of the socle is the classic column (including cannelures) "which symbolises the column of the media, of the newspapers. In this column will be situated the more classic office functions.

    ---

    comment:

It is actually emphasized that this concept has classic elements, apart from the modern input by oma. One could wonder what this says about the "old" media like newspapers of which some of them used to be progressive. It also is a remarcable echo of Adolf Loos' design for the Chicago Tribune. For once Oma won't be a trendsetter, but maybe the design will break another dogma, that classic architecture in this age is not-done. Maybe then it is possible to discuss the qualities of architecture apart from style.

Koolhaas has always been quite provocative... He's clearly leading the international architectural scene, at least from a conceptual point of view. I guess this gives him the right to try and test whatever he wants. Putting blocks one on top of the other is sooooooooooooo trendy these days. A sad re-interpretation of the "form follows function" motto... Wait and see...

`New Pcm-gebouw with ` breaking news on the gevel of our report giving ASTRE Machteld of Hulten AMSTERDAM - if it to GRANNY is due, the office of brake cabbage hare, looks out the redacties of the Volkskrant, faithfully and partly NRC concerning a couple year not only concerning the city, but also looks back Amsterdam. ` it must become a bldg. of which says people: look, there sits them, there something is going. A spot where the lichtjes go out never, says Floris Alkemade to project architect.
The design is himself still at than pril a stage earlier. Alkemade: ` it is a preliminary draft. The actual design must be still developed, in association with the project developer, political and the buurt. When the bldg. is ready, is now still not at all say. But the outlines of the bldg. outline themselves. ` the office has been clearly grafted on PCM. The redactielokalen on about fifty meters altitude are the most recognizable element. On the committed ground a type base of two layers lies where
as big as possible public activity must come: a book shop, journalistencafé, lobby's and vergaderruimten for the company, but also supplies which aim at the surroundings, the students who live there. ` the bldg. is not closed developed as a bastion, it must zoeken the link with the city. On the base ` traditional zuil stand ' (including cannelures) ` which symbolises the zuil of the media, of the newspapers '. ` come sit the more traditional office functions of PCM. The form of the bldg. is an addition of several functions. ` this design has stood in the wind tunnel, and the bezonning of the surroundings are optimum. Transparency, therefore much daglicht an important characteristic will be. But is concerning material choice and classification of the spaces still nothing definitely except that ` not only but straight floors will be ', but also ` gullyings ' and in each other overflowing levels. Also the three newspaper saving actions in clear compartimenten will work. No more standaardkantoortuin therefore? ` at a visit to the volkskrant volkskrant-redactie fell on that all windows had been screened with lamellen, and that people seemed on the one hand in search to heat insulation, and that there is at the same time large need to ongoing consultation. We must make a floor for that mixture. Wild ideas are there at this conceptual stage zat. Most important element of the current volkskrant bldg. is the relieved characters on the roof. ` which complete gevelrand of the redactielokalen as lichtkrant are able work. There those logos would be appropriate sticking out. You can present see you that you ' breaking news ' on the bldg. late.

its the translated tekst from the newspaper

Maybe he'll use drywall corner bead and painted tar paper for exterior materials like he did at the Illinois Institute of Technology, McCormick Tribune Campus Center here in Chicago and really push the envelope.

I like most of Rem's work but it is still amazing to me to see these kind of details from internationally celebrated architects. It's hard to tell whether it's a case of Rem being so innovative that it's beyond the typical citizens understanding or is the a case of the 'Emperor has no Clothes'.

his work has always been quite raw though, and i think it's the rawness that really attracts me.

the seattle library seems to be a different kettle of fish in terms of finishes and budget however

Post-modern is a bogus movement, and I just can´t take it seriously.
I think Koolhaas is better than that. Besides, we´re not able to appreciate the project by this premature concept model. Remember that what we are seing by the picture is something too heavy, rigid and inflexible, while OMA affirms that the building is gonna be as transparent as possible.
At the end, the final result may not even look like a greek column at all.
And last but not least: To be post-classic is not project doric-columns-shaped buildings.

So why would OMA release such a bulky massing model? I don't know, perhaps overconfidence?
I've read SMLXL and Delirious New York, and yet I'm still unsure as to what OMA's signiture design is.
Can anyone recommend a good book on OMA? Their research-analysis driven design theory is fascinating to me, yet for some reason, I can't understand how such a progressive firm can create such an ugly postmodernist model resembling a first year student's project.

I'm a "part-time" fan of Rem and OMA. Their projects are really hit and miss. I will suspend my judgement on this one until it gets beyond the "4 blocks of foam phase." At the moment it looks like left-over pieces of the stuff that is used to keep fake flowers upright in their fake pots.

2 things that came out from the 80s that destroyed people's lives:

    1: AIDS
    2: Postmodern architecture

I think they're a little bit desperate to bring in 'retro' ideas. Everyone thinks retro is THE thing... but I think if OMA is going retro, it might be a little bit too early to bring in 'Po-Mo', if at all.
