Calatrava is K.O.
A Bilbao Judge dictaminated yesterday that "the citizen's public interest prevails over any artistic work".
In short, citizens should not be punished to walk up and down two ramps even if its a prodigy of design by Calatrava, if they can spare that walk by using a bridge by Isozaki. The "salomonic" judge recognizes completely Calatrava's rights, "his absolutely personal and unique style" and even finds "uncomprehensible that he was not consulted by the city hall", but ends up dictaminating that above his right for the integrity of his artistic work is the interest of the citizens to avoid the ramp that " makes the crossing more dificult and tiresome". Calatrava issued a reconciling declaration that he was "moraly satisfied" because his bridge was recognized as a work of art by the judge.

Quote:
It is hard for us to be objective in this though, since we have all been scarred by detriment of great architecture, or the possibility of great architecture, by someone outside of the initial design process. But we must remember, as the Corbu quote in my signature below states, our designs are truly for the users, for the future life that will take over, they will not always do or act as expected. But their unexpected actions are always what they are, and it is our anticipation or expectations which can be "right" or wrong." I also think it is interesting that he was satisfied because the judge recognized it as "art". Shows how architects really seek the validation that we are "artists".

The judge "ordered both sides to pay the costs of the trial, which are as yet undetermined, a measure usually reserved for the loser of a civil case in Spain." |

Bringing back this tread from the dead, apparently Calatrava just won 30,000 Euros from Bilbao City Hall.
