Impressive work Jim, Congratulations!
I would love to see it built, hope the jury decides in your favour.

Yet again jim you guys pulled one out of the hat!

Amazing design and documentation of this project.

I actually had the same question as Jesse - as to whether the extremes of the structure were needed? Thereby enabling the outer for the somehow replicate the interior space a bit more!

Stunning work in all aspects mate!

I'd love to see this type of structure adopted by the climbing world cup (assuming the structure would be rigid enough to withstand the dynamic forces of a falling / caught climber). I could see this installation travelling the world and it's arrival and erection as much a reason for celebration as the event it's self! Particularly if the enclosing structure could be in anyway reconfigured for each venue or year.

This is a very sexy bit of product/industrial design that falls down a bit when it has to accommodate architectural functions. Its a lovely object but it doesnt in itself create space, space has to be carved out of what what is quite a redundant structure.

Its a context-less thing which is the nature of the brief but it has, as a concept, no relationship to the landscape or interaction with place. It is all about a fairly rigid geometrical agenda. That seems to lack any notion of human interaction beyond that of an appreciation of the object.

While I have have a general issue with elements that are not require; in this instance I think VA have chosen the right path. The notion that the space has been carved out of rock doesn't need a literal expression on the outside. In fact I think it benefits from the contrast....

Though I agree with Pitrack that the spaces and shafts could do with some more work as I am sure will happen when hopefully the design is developed...

Yes, absolutely. It took a while to grow on me, but I'm convinced now that it was the right decision.

Contrast between the outside and inside spaces was what we were going for. We also wanted to make someting that challenged the traditional look of inflatables. There are plenty of inflatable blobs out there, so we wanted to create something very different - a dynamic, but solid block of diamond.

It is posible to read the inside form through the openings in the tubes as you move around the structure, this worked really well when moving around the model. The open configuration changes everything - with the cavelike spaces exposed it takes on a whole different aspect and look.

The structure here is so lightweight, so quick to set up, and uses so little material that we wanted to make it do things you couldn't do with a 'tent'. The thick walls are what give it strength, but they also make for an interesting transitional space when entering instead of just going through a tent-flap.

About the openings for the light-shafts. One of the interesting things with the lattice is that you get a hexagonal opening in different directions. The light shafts follow these in different directions such that they intersect with the interior shell in the same shape. The concept works by taking away single elements of the structure. If you started to refine this too much around the holes (ala pitraks picture) I think it would lose the clear logic behind it. The openings look a bit flat in the renders, but look better in the moel shots. Unfortunately the photos of the model were taken before we put the translucent light-shafts in it, and we never got around to taking more photos before boxing it up for transport...

Richard - your climbing wall is an interesting idea. This thing is pretty solid, and capable of suspending things from the structure, but I'm not sure if it's rigid enough. Maybe it could just serve as a frame for panels with the holds, but it seems like the potential movement would be off-putting to people who are used to climbing solid things, like rocks. But if you've got contacts in the climbing world, hook us up and we'll give it a go!

You're right mate the structure would need to be host to fixed on panels that then serve as host to the holds. The tringulation of these panels themselves may provide much of the rigidity to the wall. Hmm?

These guys might be worth talking to with regards to any opportunities as they possibly have supplied most of the World Cup walls to date!
