    Hello PPB members and guests.

I wanted to address something I see as a problem on the forum. I have seen it a bit lately, but most recently in this thread. This may be an example of me acting to hastily as well.

We are constantly hit up by students to do their home work for them, or vague questions, or incomplete thoughts. I would ask the members here to be a little more patient with these sorts of things from new posters. We need to give the thread a chance to develop before jumping all over a poster. We need to foster a welcoming environment because ultimately PPB is its members and we don't know who may be the next great contributor to a great forum.

It is somewhat intimidating for some one to post for the first time, so lets give the thread a chance.

I feel this is another example of what not to do. Its an old thread, but is a good example of how some one may have been really turned off by the responses they received by some users. The language to describe the project was no doubt poorly executed, but we have to give people a little bit of a break some times. Just try to be constructive in your criticism, especially to new users and those who's English may not be up to your standards.

I would be interested if I am the only one who feels this way so feel free to weigh in. I have been around a while, so feel free to rip me to shreds!

Having said that, I don't think poor design should be coddled simply because they haven't posted too much. It's a disservice to an architecture student to say, "great job!" when what they've presented is poorly thought-out and badly executed. I'm tired of seeing nice renderings smooth over overly-obvious/shallow/banal designs.
Having said that, you're probably right that we've been too harsh at times and I'll try to be more helpful and not merely disparagingly critical.
      Hi ds,

I totally agree. Your first sentence is all I was suggesting.

Giving bad design a pass is not helpful to any one and I would never suggest that. Its useful to remember that we can have a good discussion on a bad design, and ultimately help it get better.

I do agree with you, but I worry about the type of education these students are getting. PPB can act as a nice counter balance to the closed circuit of architectural education. Students in some ways should be thinking more about impressing clients rather than architectural lectures.
With all web forums it is worth thinking twice before commenting.

Weird. Wasn't this my response to your post? Where is your original post, and why does it show you as the poster of this comment?

      DAC,

I agree with you, but the intent of the thread is not about positive or negative critique as much as being too hard on new posters and offering negative critique in a constructive manner.

I think they are both good points!

I know I vote for threads based on the discussions that ensue! Meaning that sometimes I will give five stars to a what I may think is s poor design when the discussion that follows I believe an asset that others would more likely consider if the thread is higher rated.

I will say I have been at times negative in initial response and I think this occurs for me when I may feel my principles are challanged, weird but we all get like that sometimes!
