Working closely with Reid Architecture, as both client and architect, Charterhouse were the set the challenge of refurbishing a prime West End property to category ‘A’ standards whilst implementing natural ventilation and sustainable design.

The refurbishment of a London office block called West End House is providing an ideal opportunity to put many of the foundation concepts of sustainability into practice. Not only because of the physical properties of the building itself, but also due to the commitment of Geoffrey Reid Associates, the building user, to demonstrate “sustainability”.

The traditional approach to London office accommodation, such as West End House, is to seal the building with closed windows, supply the necessary minimum fresh air volume via a ducted ventilation system, and cool or heat the occupied areas using typically four pipe fan coil units. While this approach gives acceptable internal conditions, it does not maximise the free cooling available under a substantial occurrence of favourable external conditions, and it does inherently have a higher maintenance and running cost on the number of internal fan driven units.

West End House lends itself to a low energy, low maintenance, sustainable approach. The natural ventilation can be augmented by the occupants’ use of the openable windows, and it is anticipated that the system will meet the cooling demands of the building and occupants for the majority of the year.
