View Full Version : Dealing with different levels on two sides of a site
Can anybody help with precedents for buildings that deal with level changes on two different lsides of a site?
i.e. North side, higher / south side, lower
east and west sides already have existing buildings
borneo district, Amsterdam, for example?
www.h2olland.nl here
I think you could give further info on what you're looking for.
How high is the difference of level, site dimensions, type of building...? :wondering

Currently it is an open brief, based in Bradford city centre.
There is an exisiting open L-shaped stair case on the site and an existing building, which I think we want to keep (at least partially).
Site is about a 6m drop from one side to the other grade to grade.
On the lower side, the buildings either side of it are roughly 5-6 storeys high.
On the higher side, the buildings are roughly 4-5 storeys high.
The site is not rectangular, but the area is roughly 1700m2.
Also any precedents that provide a route through a building would be useful.

I would suggest you look up the work of American Architect Paul Rudolph. The majority of his work deals heavily with level changes within buildings.
Tadao Ando's Rokko Housing devlopment I, II and III (perhaps IV now?), Japan
Tadao Ando's Toto seminar house, Japan
Atelier 5's Halen Siedlung near Bern, Switzerland
Renzo Piano's Atelier and laboratorium for the UNESCO near Genoa, Italy
Alvar Aalto's terrace house at Kauttua, Eura, Finland
But more generally, try this:

See my post on the Done house by Glenn Murcutt in Sydney, Australia: link (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=918)
There is a building section on the second page.

Ryo, this may sound like a simple question, but how and why do you have a gun inside all your pictures? If you are making an architecturally detailed maps for a computer game, what is it, and how do you do it? SU?

No, he actually takes a gun around all those spaces. Best hide your address.

Also have a look at the post on BuildingStudio. Several examples there: link (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=921&page=1&pp=10)
I've had a deal of experience dealing with steeper sites, in fact I have just landed a project for one that is almost flat.
Here is one I did that falls 11m side to side and 8m front to back.
And another project I'm currently working on which has a 6m fall front to back. Red = Commercial, brown = residential (red looks shit hey - must use other colour in future)

Hy, I know this isn't what you look for, because it isn't n-s, but a very interessting s-w eleveation differnce.
This Bridge is in Vienna on the cornder beween "Tiefer Graben" (means something similar to 'low valley' in german) and "Wipplingerstraße" right in the old center of Vienna. This are two crossing streets at a elevation difference of about 6-8m, both have nearly no slope.
It was build in the 19th century by Otto Wagner. There is a stair connecting the sidewalks. There are shops in the ground level and the "other" ground-level 2 levels higher.
If you are ever to Vienna you should go down Wipplingerstraße for the bridge and the Vienna Stock Exchange at the end of Wipplinger straße.
Guten Tag und liebe Grüße aus Wien,
Jakob
(Have a nice day and best wishes from Vienna)
