Project for six houses on Borneo island
Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Finished: 1996

Enric Miralles:

The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbor at Amsterdam...
Our houses are a very small part of it...

We depart from the existing planning conditions
a house on each side of the street...
We transform it into a single long house that faces both streets...

The first hypothesis is the abstract planning...
a single long house from street to street...

Then,
the small connecting alley that existed in the planning becomes an empty house...

We like to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions...

From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed...

I like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions....

very nice projects....i like the usage of the different shaded bricks....good inspiration.

Their website isn't that great, no overview and it takes hours to browse through their projects with the map concept.

He was a partner of Carme Pinos, untill they separated in 1994.

Among others, the Igualada Cemetry was one of their best works. El Croquis had some issues about them.

Well, actually Mr. Miralles died some years ago...

His first wife was Architect Carme Pinos,
Their first firm Miralles-Pinos became widely famous.

They then separated in 1994 and he then married Architect Benedetta Tagliabue.

The widow continues with the Miralles-Tagliabue Architecture firm.

Photo: Jonathan Becker

Enric Miralles was kind, intelligent, full of joie de vivre, and a wonderful architect.
The Igualada Cemetery outside Barcelona, one of his early projects, is one of the most poetic buildings I have been to.
I became an instant admirer and was never disappointed.

Our hearts go out to Benedetta Tagliabue, his wife and partner, and to his two young children.

Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue designed one of the small pavilions for Kolonihaven, the Architecture Park, under construction in Copenhagen since 1996. Unfortunately the pavilion has not yet been constructed; I will make sure it is the first one on the list next Spring.

wow this miralles guy really knocks me of my feet ....
Some of the greatest things i've seen in years!
I guess i'll have to ad him to my 'all time favourites list' just below 'Rick Joy' which is still my numero uno...

mmm...thinking about such a list , wouldn't a poll be great on the subject "greatest architect alive"? anyone?

to Primo,
It's great to be the first in university...nevertheless i think it spelled:
"Primus inter pares" :no no no: since 'equals' is plural and thus paris must be pares. I think 'paris' must be a city of some kind...
Sorry i'm such a wanker ;)

You're right (no spellcheck in Latin!)
Actually it was a joke, it started because there were three Marcelo's in my school class as well as my real cousin, so he would call me "primo" to differentiate me from the rest (and because I was actualy his "primo"- cousin in Spanish).
When I got into the university, one of the other Marcelo's from my school class entered with me and kept on calling me PRIMO, and it immediately cached on and added the "EL" to make it singular, particular.

Thant's how I became ... "EL PRIMO"

I loved Miralles-Pinos work since I knew about them more than 15 years ago. Some friends of mine who were living in Barcelona introduced me to their work.

We regretted their separation because they made a great architecture team, as well as his early death (at 45 of cancer I understand).

One of the las projects designed with Carme Pinos, wich remained under his supervision when they separated.

Although it has a covered court ND SEATS 1.500 , it is an educational facility.

The public is introduced to the heart of the building using a group of ramps and stairs that divide horizotaly the competition area and training, and verticaly the public and the sportists.

http://www.archidose.org/Blog/HD20b.jpg

A celebration of colours and lights, of happy, smiling people, of voices and gestures expressing approval and participation.
There's happiness all around, probably just what Enric Miralles - who died in July 2000 - was hoping to see on the day the market opened to the city and its inhabitants. An isolated fragment cut off from the city's main arteries, the Avenida Cambó, where the market is located, has been restored to life after years of isolation and marginalisation.
The project, which began as a simple renovation of the old market, was expanded to encompass urban redevelopment of the entire district in response to the architects' proposal, which was welcomed by the client, the Ayuntamento de Barcelona.

The new head office is designed by the prestigious architect from Barcelona Enric Miralles and by Benedetta Tagliabue, who won the call for ideas for the Gas Natural Group's new head office. The proposal by the EMBT studio is characterised by a spectacular 20-storey glass tower which, given its sinuous, modern architecture has already become a landmark on the skyline of Barcelona.

http://www.europaconcorsi.com/db/cache/pub/pub_6312_w500h500q75bw1_535522598.jpg

A horizontal building projects out of the tower between the 5th and 10th storeys, lending the building a strong personality and which from an architectural point of view enables the skyscraper to integrate into the entire complex and the surrounding city.

http://static.flickr.com/18/70832268_040746c610_o.jpg

"The building rises up out of the city itself and merges with it. From whichever angle you see it, it fits in perfectly with the surrounding buildings, whether they be the low buildings in the Barceloneta, and the high towers of the Olympic Village". This is how Benedetta Tagliabue explains how they took into account when designing it, both the area in which Gas natural's new offices were to be located and the architectural traditional of the city of Barcelona, with tall buildings which blend into the urban landscape.

Reinhardt,

1. The travel forum is intended to have your pictures and impressions about one determined building, together with relevant travel and how to get there information.
2. If you want to make a thread about an architect, we have the Architects+Designers forum, but be sure it has never been posted before (that's why I merged your posts to this thread).
3. Please don't link images from another site. Upload them to here, this way we can be sure it will always be there.

Thanks and welcome to PPB²
