Really nice photos and technically very good too, is this what you do for a living?

Hi to all,

i'll post the images in this thread within tomorrow.
Thankyou all for your appreciation.

I'm a student in Architecture here in Italy (Venice).
For a living... i'm doing everything but photograph :-) (unforutunately).
Nevertheless i love photography in all of its expressions.

The mini-portfolio i've posted is my first try in architecture photography (and to be honest, it was a tough work).

Every advice is always welcome!

[Some tech specs:
I've used a Nikon D300 DSLR, a Nikkor 12-24 f4 (I can't manage without it!), and a Nikkor 18-200 VR.
Every image was first adjusted with Ptlens and then edited with CaptureNX + CS3 (just for the crop)]

They look really well done to me torcH - you had me wondering whether it was ptlens or a much more expensive camera!

I too use ptlens, with a Canon 5D and mostly the 17-40.

I especially like the last Zumthor internal one.

Thakyou paguthrie.

The last of Zumthor its also my favourite one.
It was a little thricky to get it, since because I left the tripod in the hotel, and
because of the differences of lighting inside the building, i had to shot 9 photos (in exposure bracketing, covering more than 5 stops... and it wasn't still enough!) and then made an HDR from all this photos.
(i used the same "technique" in the 2nd and 3rd photos (the two interiors of TheHotel by Jean Nouvel)).

Before I bought the d300 (a month ago), i thought about buying a Canon 5d (because of its full-frame sensor), but since I still had some Nikkor lenses (35-70 f2.8, 50 f1.4, 180 f2.8) the game's not worthed the candel.

Well done in getting a decent result out of a HDR! The Zumthor one is especially good because it looks so natural - I like that you left the lower window burnt out. The Nouvel ones look more processed - you can tell its HDR because of the way the exterior areas look.

Having experimented a lot with HDR, I have started just masking and blending layers in photoshop - like a digital version of using grad filters. I much prefer the control it gives. Thats not to say I don't like HDR, I use them all the time in my 3d work, making HDR skydomes with my sigma 8mm fisheye! http://www.flickr.com/photos/pg/2369565810/

Thankyou all for viewing and comment.

paguthrie: when I entered in the Zumthor builbing (the last photo), I just said: I'ts an HDR! :-)

I'm not at all an HDR enthusiast, even because it's really easy to transform a good photo into its cartoonian version.

And i'm always trying to mediate between the oprimal exposure and the sense of reality in the images.

You're right, in the other (2) hdr I've overemphasized the saturation and contrast... maybe i'll try a more tempered one.

I'd also like to process hdr-like images using photoshop, but at this time I don't have enough skills to operate in this way (I used Photomatix pro).

p.s.: photos are made to be printed... What a difference in the feeling!

Beautiful shots Torch. I have a D200 and shoot most of our architecture work with the Nikkor 12-24. Great lens.

I notice that you have corrected the distortion you get with this lens. What software do you use? I use LensFix, but I sometimes can't get all of the bend out. Your edges are straight as an arrow.

Thank you Jake.

To fix the lens distortions, i use PTlens. It works very well.
When it's not enough i use (a lot of) Photoshop.

Great pics- it makes me jealous when I look back at how we used to have to do things! ;)

SwankE and I have some great pics from 97 on our Euro adventure, but back then it was all on film, I don't have time to scan them all in to post them on sites like this........ We couldn't quickly check how the pic turned out on the screen....... In fact I had to wait about two months until I got back home and printed them before I could see my own pics! :D

Aaaaah the good old days!

Hi el-capitano,

your're right: the easiness of the digital photography and its immediateness are priceless.

Nevertheless, since i'm fond of film camera, I also shoot some photos with the Hasselblad+80mm (the cheaper one... of course :-) ). I'm looking forward to process these films, but unfortunately, i really do not have anuogh time... maybe in september.
