Hi all,

First time posting a project here. Been following the forum for some time, seen lots of great works and learned alot! Anyways, this project is currently built and in use. The design was donated by our firm to the Taipei County Government about a year ago. Unfortunately, since the design was "donated" it also meant that they can change the design as they see fit. So the resulting memeber are all at least twice the size of our original design... this was the first project I worked on with sketch up, I'll get some photos of the actual built project soon so you can see wah I mean...

Project: Street Furniture for Taipei County (Design Donation)

Location: Taipei County, Taiwan

Type: Street Furniture (Bus Shelter)

Design Parameters: Functional yet expressive bus shelter that symbolizes the new image of Taipei County.

Concept: Our final concept was to conceptualize a bird in filght or the landscape paintings of China and symbolize the upward economy of Taipei county.

Role: Project Designer

Programs Used: Sketchup 3 & Photoshop

Time: 2003 to 2005

This was my first attempt so any c&c would be great!

Hi Alsheus, welcome!

I like the exploded view you presented, it gives a clear and quick view of the design proposal.

There were large bus refuges built in my city recently and there was much debate by the public about them, even though they were OK form the aesthetic point of view.
This leads me to point out that there seems to be very little sitting space, and the open ends roof would channel the wind and rain into the peoble under it.
This roof seems difficult to withstand heavy winds withought being bent at least.

One curious concerned that appeared in my city: The refuges on the main avenues had to be made strong enough to bear the weight of people climbing over them ...to watch parades!:D

Thanks primocordara :D

I totally agree with you on the rain issue, it was brought up serveral times in our meetings. We were running on a short schedule and the issue was never truly resolved (that of function vs. aesthetics)

As for the wind factor, you are correct as well...esp. since Taiwan has typhoons. We were working with a structual engineer and he was worried as well, that might be the reason the Taipei County Government enlarged the memeber sizes in constuction phase. I wish we had time to test and study a better solution though...

The seating was following the requirements of the County government, though I too thought it was not enough, but I think they reasoned that people might sleep on them if there are too many.

The cost of the project was in part donated by an ad. agency, so we had to design for "LARGE" ad. space, which really limited our dimensions as well...

Alsheus:

Nice project, excellent graphical presentation. Just one point, don’t you think that the perpendicular publicity cartel block the people’s view to the right side of the street? And what happen to the vertical cartels when seated people recline on them, will that cause damage or stain the cartels?

Thanks sandropc :)

the perpendicular publicity cartel was suggested by the ad agency who were part sponsers, they were not implemented in the end, I think b/c exactly as you stated they block pedestrian flow, esp. in already crowded areas.

As for the vertical cartels, originally there was a horizontal bar to prevent people from leaning. But the ad agency removed it b/c it would block the lower part of the ad space. I will try to get photos of the built project soon and see if there was any other type of prevention method implemented.

Its' always nice to see how a design evolves from SU to reality!!!
Thanks for posting.

Thanks all! :)

It was kinda fun seeing the design evolve from sketchup, it was a great learning experience for me. I think through out the process designing with SU was the most helpful for me.

I must say when I saw the actual built thing, the dimensions of the memebers, size of the advertisement board, the kiosk blocking part of the circulation were kinda apparent problems. And I am kinda worried how good it will shelter the rain on the sides. Well, every project is a learning experience :D
