I am planning to spend my Xmas there. Thanks! jake 15-11-2007, 04:59 I'm from the Chicago area. You really can't go wrong following the river and heading down Michigan Avenue. Of course you need to take in Millenium Park and the Gehry Pavilion. It's going to be cold so bundle up! What are your interests? Give me some direction and I'll give you some ideas. There's a LOT to see. archie1492 15-11-2007, 17:11 There's a thread here (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1441&highlight=nyc)for NYC architecture. As for Chicago, I remember several sites worth seeing. - Chicago Federal Center (http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/federalcenter/index.htm) by Mies Van De Rohe - Auditorium Building (http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Auditorium_Building.html) by Louis Sullivan - IIT Campus - - imasayer 15-11-2007, 17:56 Tons of FLW and Mies stuff. Do you want to see more contemporary stuff or more early modern stuff? jake 15-11-2007, 17:56 There's a thread here (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1441&highlight=nyc)for NYC architecture. As for Chicago, I remember several sites worth seeing. - Chicago Federal Center (http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/federalcenter/index.htm) by Mies Van De Rohe - Auditorium Building (http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Auditorium_Building.html) by Louis Sullivan - IIT Campus - - Yes, IIT is a must with Mies's Crown Hall and the Student Union Building by Rem Koolhaus. Crown Hall was just restored so it looks brand spanking new. The Student Center has got a lot of interesting space, dumb details, and cool graphics by the New York design group 2x4. Sullivan is good. FLW is all over the place with the Robie House, also being restored. Go to Oak Park north of the city and see his Home and Studio and some great examples of his smaller homes. The Isabel Roberts House is one of my favorites. There is also a great concentration of his bootleg homes he designed while working for Sullivan. http://www.peterbeers.net/interests/flw_rt/Illinois/Isabel_Roberts/isabel_roberts_house.htm The Rookery is another FLW. http://www.ci.chi.il.us/Landmarks/R/RookeryBuilding.html We need to see the Sears Tower and the Hancock Building. http://www.thesearstower.com/ http://www.johnhancockcenterchicago.com/ 333 West Wacker is beautiful because it reflects the curve of the river. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=116840 I'll look up some up the newer stuff and post it this afternoon. Helmut has a couple interesting buildings. Here is a building by Helmut Jahn that is getting all sorts of press. One of the newest "Green Buildings" that the Mayor of Chicago seems to relish lately. http://www.aerotecture.com/projects_mlh.html http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/11/helmut_jahns_ne.php Xing 20-11-2007, 05:38 Thanks to posters! Here (http://www.galinsky.com/namerica.htm) you can find some of Galinsky's suggestions for Chicago. vOid 01-12-2007, 13:21 The Chicago Architecture Foundation (http://www.architecture.org/index.html) seems to organize some interesting tours and exhibitions. Xing 10-12-2007, 09:55 Hi buddys: Except these: Chicago/Illinois Chicago Chicago Federal Center by Mies van der Rohe Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center by Harry Weese Crown Hall IIT by Mies van der Rohe IBM Building by Mies van der Rohe Inland Steel Building by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill John Hancock Center by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Harold Washington Library Center by Thomas Beeby Lake Shore Drive Apartments by Mies van der Rohe Marina City by Bertrand Goldberg McCormick Tribune Campus Center, IIT, by Rem Koolhaas (OMA) Museum of Contemporary Art by Josef Paul Kleiheus Richard J. Daley Center by C.F. Murphy Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright Thompson Center by Murphy/Jahn How about the others? jake 10-12-2007, 16:55 Helmut Jahn's Student Housing right across the street from Rem's Student Center and Crown Hall at IIT. 333 Wacker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/333_Wacker_Drive Sears Tower of course. The MOCA is not THAT great. I would put that at the bottom of the list. The library is goofy. Very post-toasty. CurryPork 11-12-2007, 23:05 I just visited Chicago for the first time last month. If you go to the Robie House, walk around the University of Chicago campus. The buiding next to the Robie house is done by Rafael Vinoly. The Athletic facility is by Cesar Pelli... and there are few more interesting buildings on campus. Try to go to Millenium Park. And also try to book the boat tour. That's definitely a must. I also made a point to see Michael Jordan while I was there. He posed for a pic for me. See attached. |
