View Full Version : Kitchen Addition/Transformation
jparchitectus 01-08-2005, 17:17 This is an old post revised to show the complete progress of project. We did a transformation of the entire house, but the sketchup work was really only used in the Kitchen Area. For a large family, and a ton of grand children the existing kitchen was undersized and over used. Our job was to transform the existing kitchen into a more contemporary design, with an asian influence - or a more contemporary take on some of the asian elements.
The picture below is/was the existing kitchen.
jparchitectus 01-08-2005, 17:18 One more view in the opposite direction.
jparchitectus 01-08-2005, 17:20 First thing we did was add a bit to the length of the room. Then as per the clients needs we worked in the large island, breakfast area, appliances, and wine rack. Obviously it is a long narrow kitchen, almost the proportions of a galley kitchen.
There were additional skylights added to allow for more natural light -

Skylights added for more light filtration into space, we also (clients request) doubled the amount of ceiling light fixtures.

Quite impressive kitchen JP! What office are you working in to have such clients? :D
Definitely a very hip one. It looks great and very well equiped (two dishwasher machines?!?! what for?)
jparchitectus 02-08-2005, 18:45 I am not totally sure why, but just about every house we have done recently has two dishwashers. I am not sure if it was a result of a large family, or people who just cook so much they require two of them.
maybe they need it to be KOSHER ? ? ? one for milk stuff one for meat stuff...
jparchitectus 02-08-2005, 19:35 We have done kosher kitchens, and usually it is a totally seperate kitchen. We actually have a local code provision to all for two kitchens in a kosher home. Otherwise it is illegal to have two kitchens in one home.
It's illegal!??! Your code is really weird!!

AHHHH... why is that illegal?
jparchitectus 02-08-2005, 20:39 It is to fight people from having two families in a home that is deemed a one family residence. The majority of homes here are zoned "One Family Residence". People try to sneak in other kitchens so they can rent out part of their house to another family or group of people. That code is to prevent people from doing that.
Ha Ha Ha... I guess this will work to prevent this. Here we have no such limitations, none that i know of.
Here we have some but people always find a way to cheat. ;)
And by the way nice work JP.(as I said before)
Yup, JP found a way to cheat, too. That has to be for two families. :D
Love that wenge material, as well as the huge kitchen, JP.

In Australia, if you don't have a stove unit in the second 'kitchen', it's not a kitchen and can be called a 'wet bar' for planning approval. It doesn't take much to install a stove afterwards though :D
sigue2000 03-08-2005, 14:01 More proof that an architects work is not so far from that of a laywers.
I like the wenge very much and have also had the chance of using it as flooring on a project. Very expensive though.
Yes, wenge is a very nice wood but unfortunately its quality is decreasing ultimately, mainly due to the deforestation process. Wenge have rarely FSC (http://www.fsc.org/en/) label.
Mark Timms 04-08-2005, 16:52 JP...
Remember this scheme from before. Its good to see it completed. The kitchen look great. SERIOUS wine rack! Love the idea of glazing between the worktop and wall units. Lets hope there not messy cooks!!
Love the colour of that wenge wood. Must admit i've not come across this timber before, but I doubt I'll get to use it if its not FSC etal...
WilsonMetry 07-08-2005, 22:23 jp,
Love the simplicity. You really pulled it all together.
One comment...the handles on the base cabs appear oversized. Or is it just an optical dilusion. A tiny bit sleaker would be nice.
Great job.
sandropc 07-08-2005, 22:56 Congratulation JP it is a clean, modern and beautiful work.

Great job.
Agreed- Client went for the heavier ones. I tend to like the sleaker more linear ones myself. Even more because there are so many handles.
WilsonMetry 08-08-2005, 07:43 The layout is remarkable in its simplicity to accommodate so much. I love the full counter top around the small table area. The strength of the horizontal line in the counter is really reinforced by the stark whiteness of the top and yet lightened by it as well. Uplifted by the purity of the white.
Very finely conceived and executed.
BTW, did you cove your SS base or straight? I didn't see any trim...it looks very clean.
davistalexander 08-08-2005, 16:03 simple and uncluttered.and modern, very excellent design .....i am trying my encourage myself into a mode of thought like this....

cobberman 08-08-2005, 16:17 Great post jp, I love to see projects from before, planning stages, and after photos. As a student I rarely get to see projects that actually become completed. Unfortunately I only get to to "hypothetical projects" while exciting because I get to do pretty much what ever I want creativly, it doesnt have the constraints and communication between clients that I would like.
Any other practicing architects feel welcome to post your projects in the same manner. I like em, and I am sure other students appreciate them as well.
They give us a touch of reality...
It came out nice JP!
I'm surprised for someone who obviously likes their wine so much that they placed the wine racks so close to the ceiling? Did no one bother to tell them heat rises (the reason most wines are kept in a sub-floor cellar)?
drichards 08-08-2005, 19:48 Congrats on the project. Looks fantastic and very bold.
I was just wondering how involved you were with the lighting scheme of the kitchen. I am suprised to see no task lighting over the island. Is there any reasoning for this? I was also wondering if you incorporated undercabinet lighting anywhere?
Really like the light fixture over the table. Very bold and ties in perfectly with the wine rack. Strong visual impact.
