View Full Version : Sanaksenaho - IKTHYS CHAPEL - Turku
This is a model of the St Henry's Ecumenical Chapel (http://www.henrikin.fi/kappeli/index.html)in Turku (http://opaskartta.turku.fi/Web/Default.aspx?layers=Ilmakuva&cp=100303,69278&z=0.5&title=Ikthys&language=fin) Finland.
This arts chapel was designed by Matti Sanaksenaho (http://www.kolumbus.fi/sanaksenaho/)1996-99. It was built in 2005.
The winning competition entry named Ikthys (fish in Greek) explains the organic shape.
The outside is copper, and the whole inside is wood.
Matti Sanaksenaho received the prestigious International Grand Prix Barbara Cappochin 2007 (http://www.safa.fi/archive/0_CAP07_res_En%5B1%5D.pdf?SAFASID=4238599a70d0a104 7614edd10b9ce9ad) for St Henry's Ecumenical Chapel.
I was fortunate to be involved in the actual construction, so I thought I would be fun to also make a model of it. I will still ad some detail, the landscaping, benches and lighting etc. when I can find the time. Enjoy.

spadestick 22-10-2007, 16:50 such a beautiful work, thanks!
Wow:eek:
Beautiful!, interior wooden ribs recall the structure of a ship
paguthrie 19-11-2007, 12:37 Really interesting project, I love how the light gradually creeps its way through the building.
I might have a go at doing a render of this one day... when i get the time ;)
What?? I didn't even noticed this thread! Sheik, thanks for posting! I love this project! :rock on: Well done with the sketchup model. I you have them (and if you can of course...), feel free to post plans / sections / details.
I already mentionned it in the 'copper in architecture' thread, but you can find some more in DETAIL 4/2006 (http://www.detail.de/rw_5_Archive_En_HoleArtikel_5630_Artikel.htm), Light and interiors, pages 341-345.
Beautiful Sheik
Construction Query .. Was a ridge beam used & if so how was this shaped / profiled ??
What material was used on the glazed? glass / polycarb panels ?
There was no ridge beam, as you can se from this picture (http://www.henrikin.fi/kappeli/DSCF1724.jpg)during consruction.
The glass is normal (straight) "laminated triple thermal glass". By the altar, on the inside of the normal glass, there are hang made art glass panels. You can see part of them in this PDF (www.puuinfo.fi/fi/MediaManager:File/caid/7727) (also has nice photos, sections etc.).
Michel. if you have sections etc. please do post them, (it would save me the conversions from DWG).
The model still needs some work. I noticed the floor halves leave a small gap... when that is fixed this should make a nice test model to compare natural light propagation of various render engines.
Thanks for the info
The section on the pdf appears to use portal frames at different heights but on the photo they all look the same height .. if different heights then it would need more specialised work at the ridge & I wonder how this was done :wondering??
The arches are higher in the middle, where building is wider. The tricky joint at the ridge is nothing high-tech, just good craftsmanship.
Keeping the seams in the copper cladding straight on a double curved surface was also tricky, but the result looks great.
Good craftsmanship indeed
It would be like trying to construct the leading edge of a swept plane wing (Dihedral angle I think its called) & at that height .. !!!!:clap:
a wonderful project, thanks for the post
:rock on::rock on: WOW Beautifull !!
pfguerreiro 09-09-2008, 23:36 EPIC to say the least!!!!!
One of those projects that I will visit one day
Thank you.
Hi Sheik and all, very beautiful model :clap:
I made a try with Indigo renderer and I apologize for to change the wall texture and to put in some differente furniture :(
A_Minima 20-11-2008, 15:07 It's only a render, I know...
But it has the merit to put a question dealing with architecture : what makes it's architecture or only "construction" ?
I think (dealing with this project) the original composition (material and furnitures) are architecture and that the rendered model (the mr_jo's one) is an "accumulation". Yes, I agree, the render quality is very good but the result isn't really as good (in French : "ce n'est pas à la hauteur") as the original idea. Rocks and wood doesn't tell the same story, nore minimalist and "sophisticated" benches... Could we tell it's a kind of "felony" ??...
But don't see any offence here, I write it with a little of "badmind" approach. A little bit of provocation is sometimes a little bit of salvation.
I apologize for to change the wall texture and to put in some differente furniture Hi, it was not my intention to soil the purity of the architecture; I know this is not the right place but take it just as a rendering exercise.
Peace and love to all.
A_Minima 21-11-2008, 13:45 ;) I know I'm a little bit "too untolerant" and "psychorigid" about a lot of think. ;)
Hi mr Joe,
It is a very nice rendering. This is a rather good testbench for light propagation of different render engines.
This reminds me, I should add the benches and the site at some point...
