The spinnaker tower in portsmouth(UK) is now reaching completion. Having started life as the millenium tower and experiencing many problems the tower is about to open. The project stalled for a long time with contractural and local goverment issues. Later foundations became expensive as were under priced and poor quality concrete were overcome. The tower dominates the local skyline and is a good focal point from outlying areas. The tower is situated in Gun Wharf Quays a recently released Royal Navy yard. The tower serves as a centre for the redevelopment of the harbour. The large natural harbour of Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy and has vast shipping and travel connections. Being close to the rail, road and sea interchanges makes this a key waypoint on journeys. The following photos i took approaching the tower via the Gosport ferry acroos the mouth of the harbour. To me its style is calatrava influenced with a rib cage showing with large femurs as anchors, although the spinnaker like sailing theme is readable. Otherwise i think the tower has good proportions and is quite elegant.
