You have to sign up, but they have a lot of misc free models in different formats as well as textures associated with each product.

Here'as a screen shot of one of the models. Usually a dxg, dwg, and .3ds model available. Materials available on right. Click and a high-rez version pops up.

Very nice Jake. Just registerd. Watch for cleaned up components.

Yea, the models are good for rendering, but a bit heavy for everyday SketchUp work. Some of he materials work pretty well too.

Cool Jake!

What is the best format for importing to SU?
dwg or 3ds? (what is 3ds BTW)

.3ds is 3d studio max's version of a dxf file

Didn't have much luck importing a dxf from this site to SU.

This is the file I tried to import, as rendered in this site...
Any hints?

3D Studio. The dwgs at this site are usually 2d symbols for plans. The dxf's work but the 3ds is consistently better, although a bit large.

SketchUppers can now use of a lot of the models available on the internet since 5 can import a .3ds. They are polygon heavy, but I use them for renders that require more polygons anyway. Sometimes the stripped down SketchUp files available at here and at FormFonts don't have enough information and smooth poorly in render packages. This is particularly evident in the curves where the number or segments in a curve are kept to a minimum for SketchUp's sake.

I downloaded a couple materials and used offset in Photoshop and they tile very nicely without additional work. Here is a sample cloth material.

Try to stick to the 3ds. The dwgs and such are subject to drafting errors like corners that don't meet etc. I think that is what is going on in the model you show. Heck, you can draw something like that in Sketchup in 2 minutes anyway.
:)

Here is a real quick render in Cheetah of a 3ds chair I downloaded. Works pretty good although there is some bad geometry.

You're right! I was just checking...:o

Do you always render in Cheetah?

I use Piranesi, Cheetah3D, I'm chipping away at Maxwell, and I use to use ArtlantisR till I had a fight with the stingy(sp?) @*$#ards. After a couple of crappy email exchanges I told them to keep it, I don't want it. Too bad it could have been useful at times.

Cheetah3D is by far the easiest setup of the rendering software that I use.
