View Full Version : [NYC] IAC/InterActiveCorporation - Frank Gehry
While recently visiting New York city (I will be posting more soon so keep a look out), I found one of my favorite places in the city to be Chelsea. Chelsea contains the old meat packing district and the High Line project. Right in the heart of this is Frank Gehry's first built work in the city that never sleeps.
More comments about the building as I post. metropolis has published a pretty thorough article on the project you can find HERE (http://www.metropolismag.com/cda/story.php?artid=2835).
Below is a Google Earth shot of the immediate area of Chelsea, which sits along the westside of the city and just northwest of the Soho area and NYU (roughly between W14th & W30th).
Here is a little closer view from Google Earth...
And of course the Placemark KMZ file...
This first image was taken from Cesar's office building rooftop "terrace" :) He was gracious enough to let me come up to snap off some great shots of the city. This is just one of them I took.
the building as you approach from 11th traveling north.
Just across the street from the 11th street side.
This shot is taken from east and south of the building. The elevated bridge you see in the shot is the High Line (I will have more on this later and am putting together some stuff for a thread about this so keep a look out for it).
Another shot from the east and from the other side of the High Line.
This shot is from the 11th street side standing on the sidewalk.
Here is another shot on the sidewalk but on the 18th street side - which is the cross street that the building sits on.
This one is one of the favorites. I found that I liked the building best this time of day. During the day the frosted glass color was almost too white and clean. at night, or evening, the building just comes alive. I think Cesar would agree?
Here is another evening shot standing on 11th street looking from the opposite side from 18th street (looking back at 18th).
a closer view of the building against the evening sky...
This shot is standing along 18th street looking toward the Chelsea piers. The glass is highly reflective but you don't get that sense unless you are standing in certain places or get closer up to the building. The frosted application to the glass really cuts down on the reflectivity.
and finally...
Me shooting the building, reflecting me, shooting the.... you get the point :)
I have mixed feelings about the building but think for Gehry it is very modest. It works well with the site and where it sits. I like the way the building moves along the sidewalks. Unfortunately I didn't get to go inside (I'm not even sure if the building is open yet). If you check out the Metropolis article there is more shots of the construction and some shots of the inside to give you a feel of that.
Overall I think this is a good addition to the Chelsea area and is just one of many exciting project going up or proposed in the area. I will hopefully have a thread up about that coming soon.
if anyone has more images please post them...
And here is a link to my flickr set (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wizum/sets/72157602061763873/) most of which I already posted.
