Renzo Piano's 'Weltstadthaus' department store has been opened in Cologne. After 5 years of construction (a court case delayed the process by 2 years) it has finally been opened yesterday. The facade is a glas-wood construction with 66 wooden beams spanning 5 storys. There are gangways and ramps in the gap between the outer shell and the shopping levels.
The 5 story building is situated between Antonsgasse, Schildergasse und Cäcilienstraße and has 15.000 m² of sales area.

I definitely prefer Piano’s take on a shopping center over future systems’. I don’t see their building standing the test of time, but I always give credit for experimenting. Piano is one of the few superstars who has never stopped exploring and innovating. I respect his work immensely.

Agreed- His detailing is masterful, and his innovative use of wood structure is something to aspire to create.

one of the few starchitects that doesn't have a set iconographic form or typology. Always changing and innovating.

Hi there all,
I have to do some research on this building, does anyone have any information on it at all? I need information on the structure, environmental aspects, services, sections, elevations and plans.
Thanks in advance for any info
