Call for expressions of interest
Can you house 8 billion people?
The challenge is to address the global housing requirement in a way that respects our environment and economically meets society’s aspirations.
Living Steel, a worldwide program to stimulate innovation in the design and construction of housing, has launched an international architectural competition to take on the challenge.
In the course of the five-year program two invited international competitions for sustainable housing are being undertaken. One or more locations will be chosen for each of the competitions, with the winning submission for each location being built. The buildings will be designed to advance the concept of sustainable housing, demonstrating the value and performance of steel in meeting the economic, environmental and social criteria demanded in each location.
The first competition starts in July 2005 with the call for expressions of interest to design sustainable housing in India and Poland. The final date for receipt of expressions of interest is 1 December 2005.
A short list of up to ten architect firms for each of the two locations will be notified and provided a detailed competition brief by 13 January 2006. Competition submissions are due by 14 April 2006. Each short listed firm will be paid an honorarium of €10,000.
The winning submissions for India and Poland, as selected by an independent, UIA approved jury, will each be awarded a prize of €50,000. The winning submissions will also be developed for construction with Living Steel and local supply chain partners beginning mid-2006.
Applications are invited from architects who wish to be considered for inclusion on the short list for the design and procurement of the first group of two demonstration buildings. A second competition and housing construction is scheduled to begin in 2007.
