Summarized – we were asked to look at 3 different sites, in order to rejuvenate the existing viaducts which have fallen into ruin. For this particular competition entry, Lower Marsh was selected, because of its excellent central location as well as its existing street market, which was slowly dying. The site was very restricted and tight and the area had basically been pushed to the back off the main Lower Marsh Street, as though it was being swept away form the public realm. (Further Design Parameters are listed on the attached boards)
Design Approach:
Our Solution was the pull the market into the viaduct and the viaduct into the street. This was done by using the architecture to help disjointed space to work in a more cohesive manner.
(Full Design Approach is listed on the attached boards)
Outcome: This scheme was given a commendation by the RIBA and is current on display at the RIBA Portland Place, London.
