I'm taking a weekend trip with a friend of mine for a little architecture sight seeing in a few weeks. We will be heading from Atlanta up through Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Lexington on our way to Cincinnati. I am attaching a KMZ file of the place we are going to check out but wanted to know if anyone had any other suggestions.

We will really only have one full day to check things out and I am in the process of setting up a tour of the Universityof Cincy so we can get inside some of the buildings. I am also thinking about a detour on Sunday morning up to Columbus, Oh to seeing a few things there too but we have to be back to Atlanta Sunday night (ya know, that work thing on Monday :)).

WHAT!!! THIS IS THE ... oh, sorry, I was doing Cad work :)

This is the first little trip I have taken since Memorial Day and that was only an hour & half drive. And that was only a day trip. I only work half days on Fridays because our office hours are 9 hours Monday through Thursday. got to love that :)

By the way JP, I will hopefully be making it up to your neck of the woods in August if work lets me have it off. I will be staying in Stamford with a friend. I will have to add on to the New York travel thread that has already been started.

I couldn't open the file you attached, but I would recommed a couple of places in cincinnati. Union Terminal is awesome, and the whole neighborhood of over the rhine has some really great original urban italianate architecture although it is in a pretty severe state of neglect. The John A. Roebling Suspension bridge is a nice little piece of history, too (for those of you who don't know, Roebling went on to design the brooklyn bridge based on his successful design for the "covington-cincinnati" bridge as it was then called). Since you'll be in the clifton/corryville area when you visit the university, you should take a trip to bellevue hill park, where you can get an amazing view of the city. If you're interested in that, I can tell how to get to a secret little path that will lead you down to a small cliff overlooking the city as well. There is also a small Frank Lloyd Wright House in the neighborhood of clifton. A lot of people always want to see the contemporary arts building downtown, but I'm not a huge fan of zaha hadid. There's also an interesting new high rise condo building going up in covington on the opposite side of the river by daniel libeskind. And whenever you're in cincinnati, you have to get some skyline chili! Have you ever been to cinci before?

also... if you decide to take the 2 hour trek north to columbus, make sure you check out Knowlton Hall at the Ohio State University, and Taco Ninja (assasinate your hunger!).

Eagles,

thanks much for the response. I was in Cinci about a year ago on my way home from Cleveland. It was pouring rain and so my stay was cut short - though I was only going to spend a few hours there anyhow.

I am familiar with most of what you mentioned, but the secret path and overlook sound very very intriguing to me. I definitely want to get some city skyline shots and will hopefully be able to get some good night shots along the river Saturday evening (crossing fingers for good weather :)). So, any direction on that would be much appreciated.

Also, I know there is a Frank L Wright house north of the campus. Do you know anything about that Eagles? I am assuming it is still privately owned? I would like to check it out but I don't want to invade on someones privacy.

I am in the process of getting an architectural tour set up at the Univ. of Cinci. I am still not sure yet as there will only be me and a friend of mine going and they typically only do tours for people of 4 or more. You wouldn't want to tag along would you Eagle? With a friend to make it 4? I still haven't gotten a response back from the person I contacted at the University. But she did say that the school and alot of the buildings are very accessible. So I am looking forward to checking out a lot of the school.

I do know about the wright house... it's the usonian Cedric & Patricia Boulter House
1 Rawson Woods Circle
Cincinnati, Ohio

this link might be helpful if you're interested in checking it outhttp://www.wrightboulter.com/

As for the skyline shots, there are a lot of good vantage points to shoot downtown. One would be from bellevue hill park, which I mentioned earlier, but also devou park, mt. echo park, and on the riverfront at newport on the levee. There's a pedestrian bridge there they call "the purple people" bridge that links downtown cincinnati to newport, ky. As for that secret path I mentioned... There's a fence all around the edge of bellevue hill. As you face downtown, there is a neat little pavillion building on your right. If you go over to the right there are some stone steps that basicall lead down to the fence. haha, I guess it's a little hard to find if you haven't been there, and it's a little hard to explain, but in that little corner of the fence there's a spot where you can pull up the fence and go through, leading down a little winding path to cliff overlooking over the rhine. Pretty cool spot especially around sunset. but it can be kind of dangerous after dark if you've never been there. You may fall to your death! Perhaps I should draw you a map or something...

Also, have you heard about the seven miles of subway beneath the city?

And I don't think I'd be able to make the tour on a saturday as I'll be working. The college is pretty accessible though :)

Wizum,

I see that you are not long on time for this trip, but if you have never been to Columbus Indiana - I'd recommend this as a destination over Columbus Ohio. It is about 90 miles directly west of Cincinnati. Look it up- a well known history book of modern design from the 1940's (Eliel Saarinen - 1942) on forward.

If you are driving north from Lexington, a detour to Louisville, then north about 35 miles gets you to Columbus. From there it is about 90 miles east to Cincinnati. It's hard to do justice to both sites in that short a time- but consider it for a look sometime.

James,

Been there done that :D Columbus, In (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums//showthread.php?t=4756)

We did think about a detour on the way up to Columbus as my friend who is going with me hasn't been there. But there is just too much to see and so we decided to just do Cinci.

Good that you've been there- like you said there is too much to see. Hope your friend gets an opportunity.

Looks like the U of Cincinatti is (has?) becoming the next Columbus type mecca of "signature" architecture!!

Well, got the tour set up for Saturday and we will be joining another party of 4 people who wanted a tour too. I know for sure we will get to tour the Main Street stuff but then we get to check out the Gehry building and everyones favorite Eisenman atrocity :) If anyone is in the area and would like to come please do. We are meeting in the Lobby of the Alumni center at 10:00 am this coming Saturday (14th) for about an hour and a half tour. PM me for my cell number if interested.

Just to note... I we had a fantastic time up in Cincy and took a ton of pics... I think my friend and me took over 2,000 pics overall... the weather was perfect and the timing for everything was just great. I have been busy with work and have been sorting through lots of pics. I am hoping to share some soon.

I did post the ones for the new Akron Museum (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums//showthread.php?t=662) that Ryarch started a thread for a while back so check that out.

hey the kmz for google that you posted for cincinatti, says the aronoff center was designed by cesar pelli.... If im correct is was eisenman who designed it and the buildings purpose was give a sense of dislocation, force the viewer to look at the architecture within the building bec there are no windows out except skylights, in doing that he forces the user to interact with one another and the architecture and to realize where they are in the space.

here is a vid on google within the space, charlie rose interviews eisenman and a panel of architects discuss the future of architecture. it might have been posted before but unsure.

Halsey,

the way I have the KMZ is correct. It is basically a performing arts building that is across the street from Zaha's museum in downtown Cincy. It is called the Aronoff too :) The Aronoff that Eisenman did is north of downtown on the University campus.
