How to setup a moon base

The real estate boom literally left Earth on Friday when – quietly, strangely – the BBC released some pointers about how to set up a moon base: first, look for "sites with a good supply of ilmenite... to extract oxygen, hydrogen and helium"; then "use lunar rocks as building supplies" because it's too expensive to bring bricks; and, finally, contact Dennis Hope, space estate extraordinaire. Mr. Hope "has sold lunar plots" to 3.4 million people, as well as some "Mars plots". Now in the works: "a private venture to establish a permanent, self-supporting community by the end of the decade."

Looks like the Archtectural Travel Forum will need a new sub-forum soon...

If someone wants to do something of this sort, they should refer to the masters, which set things up some fifty years ago.

Has any read Heinlein? If not I recommend "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" Hugo Award 1966

Has anyone read Kim Stanley Robinson? If not I recommend "Red Mars".

The idea of how to manage to thrive ( not merely survive ) beyond our atmosphere has been thought out be very keen and demanding minds, usually far earlier ( and far better) than those paid to do so. I for one have been reading science fiction since the age of seven, and consider it literature for the intelligent and inquisitive mind, magazines such as Galaxy, Astounding and Fantasy and Science Fiction were my comics. I became a member of the British Interplanetary Society at the age of fourteen ( I entered college at sixteen). You can find very detailed and heated discussions on almost any subject related to the possibilities of habitation in any of them.

In my opinion Robert Anson Heinlein ( 1904-1988) is the man, with over fifty books still in print.

Saludos

Juan

Good to hear from a Heinlein fan . For me, I believe , its time to reread his books .
Red Mars was worth reading but the subsequent books were quite a drag. In the mean time I will go back to lunar speculating . Maybe google will search a good plot for me .

Creating a self-sustainable system is a really difficult challenge... People already tried to do this, unsucessfully.

The projects "Biosphere" and "Biosphere 2" tried to create an isolated system, in which 4 people(2 men and 2 women) were supposed to live for 2 years, without external interference.

Although millions of dollars were spent in the building and planning of the systems, they failed... The oxigen levels dropped, the plants couldn´t reproduce, the animals that would become food starved and the stress level of the scientists that lived in the bubble went so high they almost killed each other!!

Well, anyway it would be funny to project a lunar station.
