Walden 7 (built 1970-1975) is the ultimate result of explorations made by Ricardo Bofill and his Taller de Arquitectura on the topic "City in Space" in the 1960's and 70's. Although a large portion of the project was never realized, the part that stands there today is probably the closest thing to a serious utopian dream come true I've ever seen. It's a statement probably of the same strength as the Capsule House in Tokyo by Kisho Kurokawa.

The whole team of autors:
Anna Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Salvador Clotas, Ramón Collado, José Agustín Goytisolo, Joan Malagarriga, Manuel Nuñez Yanowsky, Dolors Rocamora, Serena Vergano

Getting there:
Sant Just Desevern is a suburb of Barcelona, but still within the reach of the public transport and still within the same tariff zone as the cental parts.
A new tram line T3 has been finished recently. You can take it from the final stations of metro line L3, Maria Cristina, Palau Reial or Zona Universitària. The stop is called Walden and it takes quite a while to get there. However, once there you can't miss it. You'll see it from far away and the tram will stop right in front of the building.

But the most important part is to get inside! Without that the trip would be worthless. When I was there, I was unprepared and had only partial luck. We managed to get in - some guy opened the door for us, but as we were wandering through the labyrinthic building we ran into the custodian who was uncompromising and kicked us eventually out. No usual weapons helped like student cards, interest in architecture or simple "por favor". So we drew off and went back to Barcelona. The other day another friend of mine went there and he had much more luck. Not only he spent several hours inside, he explored all the floors including underground parking and in the end he had a swim in the community rooftop swimming pool. He also discovered that it is possible to get to the top of the chimney of the former Cement factory (in part of the ruins Bofill has his office) as there's a lift inside and you can see Walden 7 from the air.

I plan to do all this next time I'm in bcn as I have the feeling there's much more to see. I found out that they even do guided visits - check the website of the community (http://www.walden7.com/). It is only in catalan but if you click "visites" you can fill in the form or you can try writing directly to walden7@walden7.com.

the model of the project as planned.

"Of this complex, only the main building was constructed, which was christened Walden 7. This building occupies 5,250 square meters of land and comprises 1,100 modules of 5,3 x 5,3 x 2,5 meters and 16 floors of constant height."

This is the basic principle - the cells 5,3 x 5,3 x 5,3 m (2 floors high each) are laid in 8 levels and in each level they're are slightly displaced in relation to the lower level, thus creating hallways, galleries and terraces oriented towards the inner patio in the first 4 levels and to the exterior in the remaining 4 levels. The various bridges and galleries have names as if they were streets.

The ground floor and the fourth floor

There's one central atrium with all the elevators and 4 others which have pools with fountains on their bottoms. These 4 patios are named after the four elements;)

The ground floor is more or less empty with various commuity meeting rooms, fitness centers and shops and bars on the perimeter accessible from the outside (for security reasons).

each section is different and each floor plan is different. I won't post all of them because that's not the point. The quality of the scan is awful after all.

one more - there's life on the roof!!

and that's all. I can't tell you anything else then just: "go there". this is surely one of the strongest pieces of residential architecture I've ever seen. I even considered moving there - the rents aren't that drastic as it's quite far from the center and some of the apartments are quite small - but I only had one month of my stay in bcn left back then so I didn't do it.
If anyone else has some more experience with this or with other Bofill's early works - like Barrio de Gaudí in Reus or Castell de Kafka near Sitges or others - please share it!

I was there back in 1986, the tiles were falling off so there were protections on street level.
The interiors were terracota, not green,
Still I managed to get in and took a whole roll of slides, the views on the upper corridors were great, took great sunset pictures!
Perhaps i can manage to digitize some...

Dear god, and to think folk went mental at some innocuous FAT schemes. This is horrific.

Well according to the story as described here (http://www.bcnsites.com/clients/walden7/presentacio/historia.htm), 1986 was the low point of the history of Walden. In fact it was not far from demolition. The restoration started in 1993.

It would be great to see some older pictures!

And regarding the interiors - they are still terracotta. Only the patios are - well - blue. :wondering
