[design] Bookshelf Design - How useful is it?

The Spankast bookshelf by Dutch design duo Huting and de Hoop is a nifty shelving unit that uses taut cables to house books, magazines and other flat objects at various angles. Better yet, add some hangables to add more dimension. Or stick to one colour scheme to create a practical art piece as the Spankast can also be used as funky screen or room divider. A creative way to decorate with the usual daily clutter. SM

Can you see this really being a space saving practical use for a shelf unit?

well, it definitely is about the looks, not space saving. And I find it quite cool.
As you said it's not completely about storage, it can serve other purposes.

Decorative? yes. Useful storage, absolutely not. You can't store very much as would a normal bookcase. I wonder if it could support a whole row of textbooks either. As it appears in the photo, all of your books would also have to be a certain dimention so both cables would be able to support it. Unless you want to ruin your binding and just open the book and place the cable between the pages as show in the photo. I think that there are several more succesful bookshelves out there.

How great would drawers be that are on a sloped surface ? I would imagine everything sliding to one side of the box making a mess.

I also cannot imagine it holding too much weight. It looks as though some of the top items are allready stressing the cables.

Too bad it isnt a through cable design (it doesn't appear to be) then the stress of one item makes the cable more taught for the next. And who would hang a shirt on this bookrack?

Yeah that shirt is classic!

Grab a book and your freshly ironed shirt on your way out to the park!

It doesn't even look like you can get the shirt out without moving the other stuff out of the way

wooowww....just saw this thread(i didn't even exist when it was posted
but I really really loved this piece...!!!
I'm usually quite messy in gen with my staff and my bookshelves always seem really "ugly" because they are untidy...
but this I consider an extremely cool solution!!!
with this piece my untidiness would only seem as art!!!!
I definetly want to buy it!!!( or do it myself) hehe

I think its cool as well, but completely unfunctional, and the messy-ness would completely put me on edge, just looking at it would make me feel unorganised!
