Architecture- Art vs. Design?
I heard a colleague say to client that he was a designer not an artist. It got me thinking, what is the difference between the two?
I think design has a responsibility associated with it, whereas art is the expression of an artist, take it or leave it. I don't think it is a matter of functionality, but rather that design tries to satisfy the user. It is not really a black and white issue I guess, for example- a large sculpture in an urban environment, produced by an artist with no functional purpose other thatn espression or aesthetics. It may become a landmark, or a symbol, people may sit on it, lean against it, etc. Now is this art or architecture, is there a difference? This is in Center City Philadelphia, Art or Architecture? ![]() What are your opinions/thoughts?
