backyard deck
The Brief:
place to read
privacy from neighbor to west
place to entertain
structurally retrofit brick wall of original 1 1/2 story house
lasting materials
frame/make a piazza with a trellis that takes you far away from the busy city

The design loads are high (100 lbs/ft squared live load) and the zoning folks may not buy the height of the trellis.
Any ideas if I need to cut the height?
Can I still "frame" the garden?
Cheers,
make

All of the structure is not there yet. I went only so far in the Sketchup model. The glass detail is connected to the w section in front.
makearchitecture, images should be posted in the forum, not linked from other website.
It would help you show the space better by broadening the field of view.
Could you also explain more what's your intent with this project?

i think this pool is too small the need for the bridge. maybe a bigger pool or smaller bridge? and more greenery!! just now it is the bamboo. Is the Buddha statue for an actual buddhist? or is it just something added for style? if it for a practicing buddhist, it seems too close to the stairs for worshipping. can you explain more about the "piazza"? how are you trying to accomplish that?
If the water is just there for the atmosphere - as I am taking it is too little for swimming - then why placing it in the middle, so it claims all the available space there without much positive influence?
Why not making it one of the borders at one side?

When I saw the shot with the buddha and bamboo on a small strip of soil ( i assume), my immediate reaction was the water should wrap itself around these, making them into an island feature, albeit backed up against the wall.
I agree about the need for the bridge. But the water feature can be widened and steps cast into it leading from the 'entry' in the trellis.
You haven't told us much about your concept ideas. If the intention is to create a quiet space, then the less cluttered it is, the better. The water feature lacks a personality right now.
If you need to lower the trellis, would planting bamboo in front of it help to define the space better? Or too much green for you?

As with some, I too noticed Buddha in the piazza(?) which gives me a feeling that this could be a religous, intimate, personal space.
With what you've got shown, i dont think it promotes that. For me, the water feature would give me a feeling of seperation from that. (maybe thats your intention). I think it fails me in giving the sense of trancendance but succeeds in giving me a sense of seclusion from the neighbors/world.
The upper part however, I like. I imagine this area as a place that ties the users back to their surroundings with spectacular views. It gives the users a place to get back to the world that the area below seperates them from. I am wondering if that will be such a luxury.
BTW. it would be nice if you would attach the images to the post and not link them externally.
Thanks

Impossible to view and or rate. All I can see is that budha with the way these are posted. Please follow guidelines and upload images directly from PUSHPULLBAR.

putting the pool in the middle of the space makes it unusable, i would either make it bigger, ie focal point, not a pimple, or put along one side if you want it small and just a a little feature.
