View Full Version : Short Project - Cafe + Library
This was a short university exercise, the objective was to transform an old building to a library a cafeteria and a house with a office for a writer.
20279
This is the original look of the house exterior ( the yellow one )
So, i tried to conserve most part of the building, and give it a contemporary image

Could you downsize your images a bit?
this is the original house plan
20281
and this is the proposal
20282
In the first floor you can see the kitchen for the cafeteria, the cafeteria itself, a garden with a classroom and a meeting room, with bathrooms.
In the upper section of the plan, there is a private access for de writer's house.
The second floor, it's exclusive for the writer´s house, with a single space for his house, private bathroom and a terrace
20283
the main objective is to configure a shelf wall, wich divides the private access for the writer's house from the cafeteria. A shot from the private access:
20285
some form the interior of the cafeteria. The books are free to look, as an open library
20286
the other part of the proyect, the classroom and the meeting office have a view of the garden. it' very simple, so it can offer concentration , inspiration instead of distractions
20288
in this view you can look the comunication between cafeteria and garden.
20289
Finally a view form the terrace in the second floor
20290
it was a short exercise, mainly to see a new destination of an old building :)
excuse my poor english :)

i like it. nice renderings. what did you use? the exterior perspective would look better if you insert it into the existing photo so you could see some context. its pretty easy in photoshop
the shots are taken just using skp, and i must admit that i concentrated more in the interior of the proyect that in the relationship with the surroundings, let me try to insert it in the original place

maybe its just me...but i foresee this space as having little or no use if it were kept as a garden. Its closed of to everything. Its right next to a meeting room which will be subject to distraction (visual and auditory) generated from this space. I have been in classroom most of my life and people walkin or just standing around are dsitraction because even if you can see them, you will hear them.
sorry i dont have any solution in mind...for now
i tought of it as a "zen garden", dry , and simple, also as a natural source of light, the house is between walls. The classroom is used for "literary purposes", like mass readings, meetings, so it have a sense of social interchange of knowledge, instead of a coomon class. Another thing i forgot to mention it is the fact that a prerequisite of the exercise was the posibility to interconnect the meeting room with the classroom to make a large space for mass readings.

It could be a nice space, just looks unfinished as of yet. I can't help but imagine a reflecting pool and some plants in that area. It feels too dry and hot.(maybe that is just because of the heat the last few weeks) Are people out there when classes are going on? If so, you may want to reconsider.
I don't understand the relationship between the second image you posted and the building you are showing here? Is it part of the front facade?
I like a lot of this building. I like the letter graphic. I like the window mullion/shelf thing. What I like most is the vertical relationships. I think this project really shines in section. Pics 8,9 and 10 are my favorites. Nice work!

After looking more carefully, I think that your front facade is not appropriate for this project. Why is this thing worth preserving? I don't think that it is, and a totally new facade would have been much better. You also have some scale issues relating to the front. Look at the scale of the door compared to one of your scale figures in the drawing. Your front door is about 3-4 meters tall. This is what I found so confusing about post #2. That facade looks sooooo much smaller than the space behind it.
I know that you spent much of your time on the inside of the building, but you should have focused more on the outside. You can have the best space in the world, but it does no good unless you can draw people in.
(still a nice project though!)

It's a "south" space, in my country, the suns hits the buildings from the north, so receives direct solar light only at summer at midday, and it's supposed not to be more people outside when the classes are going on

Yes, it is the same yellow facade redesigned, i'll post that explains that better later on, thnx for the commentaries :)

Sorry if I posted while you were responding to my first post, but can you explain the scale issue that I mentioned in my second post?

a water courtain over these windows could do the trick....you could use the space to the right of the sidewalk as a reflective pool that would be fed by this water courtain and vice versa.............just a quick thought

Nice project, che Uevon!
In wich city is it located? It seems the other buildings have the typical zinc facades we see in places like Valparaiso?

A nice project so far. I'm wondering what the poles in the garden are for in posts 11 and 12? Are they a trellis for plants to grow on or just an abstract sculpural element?
I see the garden area having a lot of potential, similar to the court at Rick Joy's office. I'm not too sure about the resident being on display to strangers in the cafe every time they come or go. Seems like to me they might want a little more privacy, but that's just me.
Overall though it's a solid project. You said it was a short project, how much time did you have?
Keep up the good work.
Rick Joys courtyard for comparison.

Hello Manuel
I don't intend to sound overly critical, i really like the proposal.
But i have concerns with your bookshelves; books cannot be stored in sunlight or anywhere near it.
Similar story in the biblioteque national in paris, perrault envisaged these magnificent 'bookend' buildings, vast glass towers of storage for millions of books, but only later in the design process deciding to include interior sun shading.
Certainly, the books define a distinct area in your design, and they offer a mediation between exterior and interior but please, don't give them sunburn :)
hi, it seems none of the regulars and mods picked it up but...
please do not link external images to the thread.
could you kindly attach each image per post so if the external link is gone we still have the images here?
thanks

They are attachments, Kev.
Manuel initially linked images from external sites but I pointed out that (I deleted my post after he corrected) and they are fine now.
You must be all worn out from yesterday's mess.

And when two people are full of themselves it is:
'Great minds stink alike'.
Sorry guys, couldn't resist this one. :P
Even I was thinking of that rick Joy project, you reckon.
Rick Joy is still one of my all time favorite 'vernacular' heroes. The thing i like most about him is that in every project he starts building himself.
(pouring concrete etc.)

'Great minds stink alike'.
:D :D
The project is in Santiago, Chile, in a place called Bellavista, the poles are abstract sculptures, and yes, the glass of the self wall needs some extra protection against sun, but take in considertaion that the ceiling and the wall reduces it´s direct action
20310
the arrow indicates solar action
the time i had to develop the proyect was one week, like 5 days to be more precise, in respect to the facade
20312
as you can see, the door is double, and is not entirely openeable, just a portion of it, it has 2,4 mts tall.
and i love the critics, that way i can do better things next time :D
20313
awful photo tricked facade XD
I like the idea of that inner courtyard. Its situation clearly marks it for me as being fully part of the classroom, and only a "sideways" contact with outside for the cafeteria.
Though I feel that there is some flaw situated around the courtyard. I am taking that the cafeteria will be in use in a bigger timespan than the classroom. Now, when there is a class, the people inthere find themselves in a very nice surrounding, with the courtyard to get some fresh air during break or so, and that is okay, because both the classroom and the yard are in use of the same people at that moment.
A not so cosy area with empty classroom tough. (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showpost.php?p=56803&postcount=12) This (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showpost.php?p=56846&postcount=25) would be better, as there is always something to do inside the room next to the yard.
What with those that are in the cafeteria and / or reading a book at that time? I can image that those people would like to go sit outside with nice weather - the cafeteria at my school looks dead empty around noon when the sun shines, and all sit in the yard just next to it.
You can't do that here. On the one hand, you would feel like an intruder, when you want to use the yard during other's class or during some kind of presentation; and at the other hand, when there are no people present in the classroom, the outside wall gives a very deserted feeling to the yard.
I would try to enlarge the connection cafeteria-courtyard, and diminish the connection with the classroom. Ever considered changing positions of the classroom and the cafeteria blocks?
To end with:
This visualisation (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showpost.php?p=56884&postcount=38) is nice, but are you going to change the façade color from yellow (as seen in your first post) to that whitish? Your adaptations of the façade seem to go well with the yellow one, but the way you visualised it in your last post would not feel right...
