Hey guys, Thought the forum needed a bit of a respite tonight. :bang head

Josh and I are planning to head out to Seattle in a few weeks.
We are open to any suggestions/ recommendations you can give us regarding less obvious architectural stops, restaraunts, bars, things to do, etc.
We've both been there before and have seen the more obvious touristy things, but it was before the new Rem library - can't wait to see it!

We are peace-loving eaters - we'll eat anything!
I would love to go for a day hike, but won't be bringing our bikes
Josh is a football fan, I try to be supportive...

I went did the Islands last time - beautiful

We hope to be there around a week, will be bouncing among several friends, and will probably stay near downtown most of the time, although I would like to spend a day or two in nature as long as I have the time off from work.

Thanks for the advice Marvin.

Oh, and I forgot to say shopping!

Any recommendations for modern houseware/furniture shopping?

well, my wife and i usually keep a pretty low profile when in SEA (not a lot of barhopping, but architecture and good food are abundant), but i'd say the library is definitely worth a stop. i'd be interested in hearing another opinion (i wasn't particularly impressed...) check out the ballard and fremont neighborhoods - lots of cool pubs and restaurants. also the ballard library by bohlin czywinski jackson is an absolute gem.

also, through next month, there is a show at the henry art museum at UW of maya lin's work which looks really cool. i hope i will be able to get up there to see it before it is gone.

here are some select kmz for your reference.

enjoy your trip, and enjoy one of my favorite cities (i like it so much i'm moving there later this year....):D

uwajimaya in the 'international district' is not to be missed... a great grocery store and an unbelievable food court area. food from the four corners of asia. a great introduction to the ID, and right at the edge of SODO (south of downtown) the up and coming art and gallery district next to seahawks stadium and safeco field.

OK,OK it's a little pedestrian, but i'll admit it... i like to shop at IKEA... some pretty decent modern furniture and household stuff that doesn't necessarily require a 3rd mortgage on your home.

one last one, then i have to get to work...

peter miller books (1st ave - pike place market) is a pretty good architectural bookstore - the best in the northwest by my estimation... he also has a selection of home stuff and there is a design within reach location just a few doors up. also check out paperhaus just down the street towards belltown.

make sure to take pictures!!! and, ima, make sure to take some photos not neglecting your wife. I had a fellow architecture friend get married recently, and he showed me their honeymoon photos. Progressively she became more and more out of the photos...there were even a few with just the top of her head!

So you want to see pictures of my wife? Maybe you should tell me what she should be wearing too?

In all seriousness. We always forget to take pictures of us in these places, we are too busy taking pictures of whatever environment we are in. So that is some good advice.

I think the question you should be asking is: who doesn't want to see pictures of your wife?

Thanks for all the responses guys.
I am especially awful about taking pictures of anything except maybe buildings. I have barely any photos of myself since I was a little kid.
Then again, this may be a good thing since I look pretty much like a unibrowed twin to Josh's avatar!

some actual help rather than heckling...

And I always like to look at state AIA awards (if on the web) to find current projects that may not be as widely published, but worthy of regional attention:

Hey guys, thanks for all of the valuable info on Seattle. We loved the library and St. Ignatius (my second visit to the chapel, and Coral's first) We also visited the Bellview art museum. I was not impressed at all with that one. We were there on a Monday and it was closed, but judging from the outside and through the window at the lobby we decided it was not worth a trip back when it was opened.

We spent a lot of time walking and driving around in several of the districts, and enjoying being in a real city. Saw some great modern houses and lots of stuff that isn't really forum material. I will add some photos to existing posts on the library and St. Ignatius soon.

Thanks again, you guys rule!:not worth
