Bath Spa , England.
For train times and fares within UK: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Direct trains from London Paddington leave frequently, approx 90mins.
The Spa's web site is: http://www.thermaebathspa.com/visitorcentre/thermae_bath_spa/facilities/index.html
This project has been so long in the making. Nearly 10 years since the funding came through. There have been many set backs and for a while it seemed like it would never happen.
I have heard glowing reports on the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/saturdayreview.shtml
"For ten thousand years hot mineral rich springs have welled up under the modern city of Bath - creating a Spa which has been fashionable from Celtic and Roman times, through the C18th heyday of Jane Austen novels right up to the late 1970s - when the NHS decided to stop taking the waters. Now, `Thermae Bath Spa' is opening to the public again after a long and controversial refurbishment project. A new building by Nicolas Grimshaw joins the restored C18th baths in a complex providing four pools, twenty therapy rooms, four scented steam rooms and a restaurant." BBC
Thermae Bath Spa opens on Monday 7th August!!!
All of my in-laws live there, and every time I visit Bath I've wanted to actually get in the water, but the baths have been closed, until now. I can't wait for my next visit in October.
The city is amazing. I understand that there was alot of controversial modernisation back in the 60's and 70's, and some fine details were scrapped, but the place has character to burn. The stone used for much of the building is magic. The topography is unique, and there are many great vantage points within a 20 minute walk from the city centre.
I think that the new building works well in the site, which is very dense and central. I am sure that the details are amazing, and fully expect the pools and all other areas to be free from any faults that would prompt a closure (that has already happened once, but I don't know who got the blame).
Hopefully there are pics going up on Flickr or some such site. I saw an article on Gambion, but I don't know how current it is. Like I said, this project took longer than Dante to see the light of day.
