The interiors look really good. I like the way you used that antique piece of furniture for the bathroom.
Are you going to make any changes on the outside? IMHO I would change the color of the house. That light yellow is one of the most hedious colors for a building. Actually almost any yellow sucks.
You can explore colors with sketchup to get an idea of what you can do. I cannot think of a color other than white though.

wego,
My initial impressions are that you have achieved quite a dramatic refurb without too much structural work. I imagine that quite a bit of careful thought we into this work, and it shows.
Nice pad, I'm jealous.

I like what you have done you seem to have lost the clutter as well ! Everywhere seems bigger im really glad you lost those curtains in the dining area.It must be satisfying working on your own place (im jealous too)

Thanks everyone.

The changes on the exterior start in 2 weeks with a new wood garage door.

Any suggestions on exterior colors? We really want to change that nasty yellow. We thought of obsidian (dark brown) on all the siding, but we are not sure if if it will make too much of a contrast. We also thought of white caca, it allways looks great on plans, but mixed with the limestone?... i am not sure

I would be glad to send some of you the model if you think you know of a good color.

Let me know.

I am hoping the before pictures are from the previous residence. Looks like the late 70' or early 80's was stuck in a time warp. Definitely a big improvement to wards updating the interior. Really like that you went with a dark stain on the floor. Very dramatic. Just wondering if the light above the dining room is complete, looks interesting. How do you find it on the eyes though for brightness. Overall definitely a big and well tailored reno. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Just amazing how a change in finishes can completely change the feel of a space. I think you guys made some great decisions. Love the black on the windows. Really makes those openings pop. This is good insperation for my own remodel project. Haven't gotten to far because, apparently, $$$ is hard to come by, but I will post when my wife and I finish the design.

wegofaster
16-08-2005, 17:21
ima, thanks... yeah the dark stain on the windows was a big decission... we went with that color on all the trim... we also changed the base trim to one of my own designs, a 1by2 with a 1by4 above... a square edge helps define the space. the trim carpenters were in shock when i asked them to install it.

wegofaster
16-08-2005, 17:26
richards,

yes, the before photos were of the previous owners.... :P

The dark floors are great, the space was large enough to make the floors nearly black... we love the contrast to the furniture.

We also used grey slate in all the wet areas, kitchen bathroom decks etc... These dark colors brought a richness to the space previously unnoticed.

And actually the light fixture is very easy on the eyes, the bulbs are like 15watts each... probably looks brighter in the photo, than in real life

thanks for the comments.

just wondering . . . .

how u make the floor rendering ( hatch ) like in your floor plan.
you made it in sketchUp ?

wegofaster
16-08-2005, 17:40
go to your textures in sketchup, they are under sketchy textures

for the outside maybe a bright orange or an olive green.

wegofaster
16-08-2005, 22:12

wegofaster

could you be so kind to post the olive green color you use on your models all the time... i would appreciate it. I cant seem to get the same color, and it looks so good.

16-08-2005, 22:49
Well, a friend of mine had a house with the same finish as yours and it was all painted a bright orange and it looked really good. I never thought that such a color would look that good on a house. Also the setting was simmilar being sorrounded by green areas and trees. I don't remember the shingle color though.

I dont like much the colors palette in Sketch Up. So, when I want to explore new combinations of colors, I go to Photoshop and I look for Pantone colors chart. Draw in the screen three or four rectangles and I apply color to them until I find a range that I like. .Then I export them to Sketch Up and I apply them to the model. Also I use to export the selected palette to the sheet of conditions of the project.

Jan - there is no green that I use repeatedly - I tend to pick new colors each time I build a model. Point me to the image with the green and I'll extract it from the model and post it. Is it in any of these?

this is more of a pea green (http://www.lamidesign.com/plans/planscat/0367/0367_01.jpg)

the trim here is olive green (http://www.lamidesign.com/plans/planscat/0380/0380_01.jpg)

this is a very grey olive (http://www.lamidesign.com/plans/planscat/0357/0357sips_01.jpg)

is any of that what you were thinking of?

Greg

i was getting ready to reply to your PM, i like the later two of the colors you listed, not the pea green... But you can post all three, then i will post all treee renderings to take a poll on colors... also the tan you used with the olive green is a great color, i will use that for my stone...

Thanks so much for helping, i appreciate the previous attempts you made to contact me, shows your dedication to the forum, and to help others. :rock on:

Ok - here is the file I use for mocking up color trials when I build my house models. I've painted my test panel with the various siding and trim colors from those models.

24-08-2005, 00:10
Do you have a name for the green on the fourth box, the one in the front?. Thats the nicest of the greens IMO. Thinking about a color like that on one of the walls in my room. :wondering

lavardera
24-08-2005, 03:45
No, no official name - you are well come to name it if you wish: Marr Green perhaps?

I had put a label on that first test panel, but it does not seem to be there in your image - odd?

Mate nice job, must say although you have minimised the structural changes to the dwelling there is one I personally would propose. I would consider whether the opprotunity presents to open the garage door to the front (fitting two cars side by side may be the issue) this would allow the removal of that huge driveway area, more landscaping to the forecourt and an increase in privacy. As well as a more intimate entry sequence to the house.

Richard

Just a thought! Don't send me the bill. :wondering

wegofaster
24-08-2005, 05:29
thaks alot guys... we cant face our garage forward in this neighborhood, but i agree, it would make for a more private and usable enrty. I will post some colors in a bit.

Any other exterior model enhancements are welcome... please let me know.

I am changing the garage doors to rough cut cedar, and will change the light fixtures.

Landscape will be changes as well... all the boxwoods... too many, will take a few out and add some horse tail "equisedum) ... i think thats how its spelled

i am a bad speller.

Jan, are the outside lime stone painted...?
If they are, why not blast them up with sandblast/ waterblast... leaving the natural finnish...
probably this way you wont be affraid of adding some color to the hous, even if it is white...

wegofaster
25-10-2005, 18:50
no the limestone is the natural color, no paint... but if you look at the photos you can see there are some parts with tan color siding

Thanks Pedro

Here is some inspiration from Joseph Eichler. There are some green ones sprinkled in there. Similar building type.

http://www.eichlersocal.com/tmbgallery.htm

http://www.eichlersocal.com/tmbgallery2.htm

His handbook suggested muted earthtones on the building and only a bright accent on the door.

I'm not good with colors either. This is what I am trying.
Isozaki said you can't think about colors, you just gotta feel them. There is no red, blue, or green. Put colors in front of you and think with eyes.
If memory serves me correct, that's what Matisse, Barragan, and Eichler did. They painted pieces of paper with colors they like and tried to find good combinations with those paper. Barragan was always carring a stuck of painted paper in his pocket, and looked at them, even felt them with his fingers!
I wonder if Richard does the same.... :wondering
