View Full Version : Kitchen First prize! (that could have been)
This is a kitchen idea we developed to participate in the designboom/bussel competition. The presentation is not complete because 5 days before deadline somebody (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/member.php?u=6) told me that he forgot to sign us up.
Anyways the concept is to reduce the space occupied by the kitchen to the possible minimum and turning it into a piece of furniture that can be installed on any space with a little intervention. So the whole kitchen is reduced to two "coffins" that house "cooking" and "washing".
When closed the units measure 8"x2'x8' (20.32cm x 60.96cm x 243.84cm)
They open up sideways to reveal the folded worktops and sink and the storage space wich is just about enough for a kitchen this size.
The worktops unfold sustained by pistons (like the ones in trunks of cars). The sink is telescopic, so it fits in the available depth when it's folded.
Again, the project is not completely done (ie, doesn't have a faucet), but I think we could have been relatively succesful with it.
Here (http://www.designboom.com/contest/winner.php?contest_pk=11)'s the competition results (the first second prize is infuriatingly crappy, the other second prize is not very different from ours).
wondering where you would put the pots&pans and the tea kettle - cos otherwise I can't see any use of the cooker? or maybe you just forgot to hang some on the wall as well...
i like it. really. but for some reason it seems to me the second second prize is better (you started the comparison). maybe cos the image of the closed kitchen is so surprizing and funny and pure.

Agreed. I also like very much your proposal, Caca, but for me it lacks design on the furniture itself. It works well as a kitchen, but I miss the something else it could become when it's not being used as a kitchen.
Anyway congratulations and shame on you Jason!:D

See our concept was really developed so it could be adaptable to more then one particular shape room. I do like the almost comical sense of the 2nd prize posted above, but ours was intended to be able to be expanded or moved in any way someone wanted. I would expect that 2nd prize is what you see is what you get....
For example our modular can be expanded to different lengths...or become 2 sided, or work in very small lofts or apartments. It could be closed down to very minimal dimensions to have aliving room for example. Ours would also be fully functional - ie sink, oven, etc.
We were going for versitle. I would expect for a more flashy exterior "skin" we could use colors or some similiar grid driven design similar to Kevins box addition...
