Architect: KÖZTI kft. - Skardelli György, Pottyondy Péter, Lázár Ferenc, Gáspár László

built in 2003

The state of the art, 21st century facility is capable of accommodating a minimum of 2,500 and a maximum of 12,500 persons in safety and comfort. The hall is equipped with the most modern light and sound equipment.

The base level of the arena can be opened up to a maximum size of 8,000 m2 and many types of layouts can be utilized. The area can be divided any time by floor to ceiling drapes.

This makes it possible for the Budapest Sportarena to be a venue for various national and international events such as sports competitions, concerts, exhibitions and conferences, family shows and spectaculars. Central Europe's most up to date arena is able to hold such „classical” events as basketball and handball championships, tennis and gymnastics competitions, ice hockey matches and athletics events, as well as spectacular sports events like basketball shows, ice theatre, motor-cross, jet-skiing, surfing competitions and presentations.

The designers of the building dreamt up a public park over the car park that is not only a meeting point, but also where people are glad to spend their free time. On the giant terrace covered in granite visitors can spend time in the coffee-house, the restaurant, visit the ticket office or the Sports Museum.

Address: the area surrounded by Stefánia Út, Ifjuság Útja, Kerepesi Út and Hungária Körút (the ring road)

Getting there: the easiest way - by metro straight from the center, red line (M2), direction Örs vezér tere, get off at "Stadionok" and you are there.
There are also trams 1 and 1A circulating along Hungária ring road which you can take e.g. from the Népliget bus station - it's 5 stops only, direction Bécsi Út. You may also want to use some of the hundreds of bus lines, but that's for advanced users.

the access stairs and ramps leading from the Stadionok metro station. the arena sits on a platform elevated some 6 meters above the terrain. under the platform there's a suburban bus station and a parking lot.

this image (from the Közti architects website) shows the park covering the platform in front of the arena. the main access would be in the upper left corner in this photo. the crystal-like forms house vertical accesses from the underground garages, a café / tea house and ticket offices.

now the problematic part of the whole project is the part under the platform. this is the entrance to the bus station for buses. as the platform hovers above the ground, it is only accessible in a few places for pedestrians. the rest of the perimeter looks like this = a black hole leading to the parking or a concrete wall which really doesn't add to the street life.
moreover, the bus station has no daylight and in fact nothing nice or interesting in its design - just a grid of concrete columns. it's dark and ugly.

this is a detail from the pedestrian access to the bus station from the metro. i find it rather funny.

regrettably the arena was closed so I could not enter. this image is from other source. more can be found at the arena website (http://www.budapestarena.hu/). there are also photo galleries from the events that have taken part inside so far.
