Hi fellow architects and designers
we got a new private residence project to work on.
the clients comments on the prelimenary meeting was that he wants to make it climatically well planned . he wants proper natural lighting in the house, proper ventilation of the house. the house is located in a composite climate zone with dusty winds. the summers are hot and dry but in monsoons there is a lot of humidity.

i am trying to study before designing ,the following aspects
1.) what are the remedies or design strategies for dealing with the dusty winds and preventing them from entering the house
2.) what should be the orientation of the building so that i can make good use of the climate and sun movement?
3.) How to plan the air circulation through the house so that its well ventilated( naturally)
4.) Also from where can i study the design for windows openings and shading devices depending upon the direction in which they lie. because south side windows require different type of shading than north side and same is the case for other orientations.

i want to study the climatic factors and design startegies before i actually start designing . I am reading about that but would be really glad if someone can guide me about this

Thanks

Moved to pre-design discussions.

3Dmaxed, you probably know your weather conditions a lot better than we do. Maybe you could describe them to us... I personnally know nothing about india so my recommendations would sound silly... Aren't they examples of so called 'vernacular' architecture to get inspired from? Ancients were often a lot smarter than we are nowadays...

One book you should look into is 'Design with Climate: An Approach to Bioclimatic Regionalism' by Viktor Olgyay - (1963) Princeton Press . You'll find valuable information there. Another good source is Hassan Fathy. Search in this forum, I remember a thread about him.

sorry administrators for posting under wrong head

Here are the characteristics of the composite climate:
1.)SOLAR RAdiation: very high in summer and with a small fraction of diffuse radiation . In monsoon, the intensity is low with predominantly diffuse radiations

2.) Ambient Temperature: in summer maximum is between 32 - 43 degrees celsius in day and 27 - 32 at night. In winters the values are between 10 - 25 degree celsius during day and 4 - 10 degree celsius in night

3.) relative humidity: the relative humidity is about 20-25 % in dry periods and 55 - 95% in wet periods

4.) Precipitation : between 500 - 1300mm PEr year

5.) Winds : this region has strong winds during monsoons from the south east and dry cold winds from the north east. In summer the winds are hot and DUSTY.

6.)SKY CONDITION : The sky is overcast and dull in the monsoon. During Winter it is clear m and has occasional haze in summer

generally the composite regions experience Higher humidity levels during monsoons than hot and dry zones. Otherwise most of their characteristics are similar to HOt and DRY zone. Major design considerations are to
a.) resist heat gain by providing shading, reducing exposed area, controlling and sceduling ventilation, and increasing thermal cpacaity. It is imperative to control solar radiation and movement of HOT winds in this climate.

I hope these help.

also i want to inquire about a few general things in addition to my earlier queries
11) What is the best direction to get light because some say north and some say south. South gives direct radiations and north gives diffused.
2.) how to design accodring to prevailing winds in the region. eg as mentioned above the wind direction is south east in monsoons , so does it mean the winds are coming from south east and going towards north west. So it means the openings shall be placed on these faces...

thanks to all

What is the latitude of the site?

geographically located at latitude (30.14 degrees) 30° 8' 24" North of the Equator and longitude (77.28 degrees) 77° 16' 48" East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of the world.

With this kind of variations and high humidity, the main concern would be to allow continous air movement throughout the house and at the same time block the gusty winds. One variation of handling this would be to create a dummy wall of jalli blocks ( blocks with holes in them) which works in blocking the dust and allowing air to move in with a venturian effect. ...
Shall try and post some images of the jalli wall.

Also think of thicker walls in the western side to cut off the hot evening sun.

thanks chetan....

i wud be glad to receive more responses from other architects also. also Like u told sun is harsh from west During evenings can u tell me more about sun movement and its effect on different directions during different times of day and how to deal with them

Thanks

so u mean this jalli wall shall pe placed on the south east side that is the direction of the monsoon winds or north west that is the direction of Hot and dry winds in summer
