We are planning the remodel of our house and will be running duct work upstairs (where there is currently no heat/cooling). My question is, have you guys seen/done any cool things with your duct work? The two things that I am trying to avoid are large gyp duct chases and exposed duct work. Exposed works in many projects, but we would prefer not to show it. It is mainly the main supply/return that I am worried about. Branch lines should fit between floor or roof joists.

Thanks david, but his website didn't show anything mechanically related. Know of another resource?

just yesterday my new boss showed me a way of making a plane as a baffle of horizontal boads with minimal spacing between to use as return grills. Looked great - You wouldn't know it was for that. It was more a part of the architecture. The actually even lit the plane from behind. It became a strong element...that just happened to have the grills behind it...not just the hvac grill.

Love to see a pic, JP! I am guessing if you had one you would have posted it, huh?

Thanks guys. JP that is a good model for a return, I really like it. My problem has more to do with duct runs however, so any information would be helpful. Keep the info coming guys.

Most of the time you have to resolve them with soffits :bang head

why not turn the soffit into something more architectural as well....

more of a sculptural expression of a linear element or something.

That is what I was thinking, I just don't have a vision for it quite yet. Well, keep your eyes open.
