View Full Version : [Exeter] Phillips Exeter Academy Library - Louis Kahn
The Library at Phillips Exeter Academy by Louis Kahn is one of the most impressive buildings I have seen. Years ago I lived within a 20 mile drive of the library and would spend countless hours reading books and sketching design. Perhaps one of the most inspirational places I admire. Relatively, New England is where brick is mostly used for all buildings, because of it's durability, color selection and historic relevance. The masonry at the Phillip Exeter Library is a work of art, clearly implemented with a true understanding of the material and its properties. However, it is the combination of concrete, wood and brick that creates a timeless harmony and distinguishes this building as an architectural icon.

I envy you for being able to study books there.
Have you seen 'My Architect'? If not, try get it someplace.
Nice set of pictures InArch! Thx
Now all we need is a street map on how to get there and a GE kmz.

Primo, thanks for including the map. I noticed it was one of the few "low res" places on the planet these days, very grateful you found a useful image of this location.
Thank everyone for the enthusiasm and appreciation. This building has a place in history and shares many aspects of Architecture, with a capital "A", that are lacking in today's developer society. We should be looking at Architecture as a way to enhance the human experience.

I was in New York for six years and I didn't visit this building.
I must have been heavily doped or something.
Thanks for posting photos InArch, now I feel a little better. :craqueur:
I would like to dedicate this post in memory of Paul Arris, a friend I met in college whom spoke avidly of Louis Kahn as a great architect and also incorporated Kahn’s principles in his academic projects. Because of Paul’s persistence, this work is meaningful to me in multiple terms.

Recently, I was asked by a member of the Google SketchUp modeling team to submit the Phillips Exeter Academy Library photos to help with their efforts to model the AIA 150 favorite buildings for Google Earth.
They have completed the model (along with interior) and it is now available at the 3DWarehouse (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=6e3f666c69da10fbebd451a5d6eebdae).
-enjoy!

Some wonderful renderings over at {E}vermotion by 3seventh (http://evermotion.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69004). He has left the bookshelves empty, giving you an impression of the raw space.

Some amazing stuff. :craqueur:
This guy understands construction and structure... which is not always true with super-renderers.

I'm beginning to worry ... not talking of future but now ... when we see pictures of buildings; which is Real and which is Rendered?
