The Maritime Youth House (http://www.arcspace.com/architects/plot/maritime/maritime.html) is shared by two clients, a sail club and a youth house, who had very different programs. The youth house needed outdoor space for the kids to play, the sail club needed most of the site to park their boats.

Instead of using the 25% of the budget allocated to clean the polluted site, the architect's discovered that the pollution was heavy metals, and therefore stable. If they covered the entire site with a wooden deck, without reaching the bottom, it was not necessary to clean the site. This meant that the entire budget could be spend on the program and the architecture.

The design is the literal results of the architect's negotiations with the two contradictory demands. In the places where the deck rises it allows for boat storage underneath and, at the same time, becomes an exciting play areas for the kids. The common room, where most of the daily activities take place, is located in the front house, the workshop and storage is in the back corner building.

In contrast to the wooden exterior decks the floor in the community space is white concrete with white stones and a standard grey concrete in the workshop and storage area. This is meant to reflect the dominance of the outdoor activities; the wooden deck is the actual "room" of the Maritime Youth House.

Mikael drove us there, so we didn't catch the public transport. It's not exactly obvious on the street. Look for something that looks like a marina with a dirt road leading to a carpark and a fenced off marina.

It's basically a private marina, but we begged our way into it (well, the gate wasn't exactly locked neither).

Walk about 100-150 metres in past the gate and you will find this... (sorry, we got there almost afterdark in the middle of scandinavian winter, that's all we have)

part of the beauty is how they have used the same number straight pieces of decking material, even if it was curved space, so they had to space the pieces out to accomodate.... as a result, beautiful light emerge at night from the fluorescent lighting below.

the sand dunes/waves like land/roofscape really fits the location.

as a result, i think this is a new 'sitting pit' for the children. you can see the timber is fresh and new.

Talk about the ultamate encorporation youth activity with the functionality of the space. It is understandable the stance of management, but the potentially of making the space universal to youth could have been an integral part of the wood shell. Must be the skater in me but I know those signs will definitely be ignored. Could be a little bit of a rough ride but non the less well worth it. Excellent project posting. Very interesting approach to an environmental issue. Great pics. Thanks for posting.

I never heard of this project before, so first of all i want to thank you.
Second were is it located? Kvarterløft doesn´t ring any bell =(
Third, it's a very interesting space and a great concept, but for me it seems to have some problems, for instance people with reduced mobility can´t fully use the outside space (please correct me if i am wrong).
Forth, don´t worry about the management for the look of some of one of the photos i think people are using the space the way they want. ;)

Ive seen it before, great project, you can make great arhcitecture, with simple designs and keep the budget low.

It goes along the same line/theme as the Yokohama port.

It reminds me a lot of this (http://www.sketchup.com/forum/read.php?f=3&i=9516&t=9516#reply_9516)
It's a really beautiful project. I had forgotten all about it. It should have been featured in the Phaidon Atlas.
It also brings me memories from when I sailed in those small boats. It was a lot of fun.

I have seen this project before but did not know the thinking behind it
Was this on PPB 1?

Well Cacapis has unknowingly just answered the question amazing similarity in the two schemes

This is really funny, because when we designed the sailing school of Brussels (we lost the comp), we didn't know the PLOT project, we were just influenced by the FOA's Yokohama Terminal ( a friend of mine showed me video captures of the built project, which was very interesting because we were able to compare the initial winning scheme and the finally built one... concrete vs steel, lot of railings everywhere forbidding the sloped roofs access, etc.)... Finally I'm happy to see that PLOT did succeed to build these walkable sloped roof concept in a smaller scale than Yokohama, very cool!:clap::clap:

Some fine Scandinavian weather. It is a very simple, open and welcoming space. A great project at a small scale.
