View Full Version : Residential mid rise help
Hello! I'm desperately seeking inspiration in some of the architects that have solved appartment buildings in oddly shaped lots. What I have to do is an 8 floor building with between 28 and 30 appartments.
So if you know of solutions that might come handy please give me names or whatever you can find!
Thank you!!
Kristov Krusjev 15-02-2007, 20:26 I have an eerily similar problem, just wanted to :bump: bump this thread and see if someone could point me in the direction of some references. Anything goes as I haven't decided on a direction yet.
am_i_wry 15-02-2007, 20:31 Resi is a fairly complex thing and the 'architecture' of it only comes some way down the line after some fairly hardline commercial considerations and you often find that inevitably awkward sites result in awkwardly shaped buildings as its all about cramming the required number of units on whilst fulfilling whatever planninf criteria there are for zoning and overlooking while doing all that below whatever height threshold applies for an uplift in the fire regs while doing all this in the most efficient manner possible with as few cores as you can get away with. Its very often a case of stack if up and see what shape you get and then extract as much quality as you can to make it lettable/saleable. I dont think that quite answers your question actually. Sorry!
Maybe Caca can start posting his solution...
To me it doesn't seem that awkward a shape. It looks almost symetrical with a lot of opportunites. The roadside and 2 corners can influence your design i would take this anytime over the dreaded blank canvas syndrome ! A simple extrusion of the site is always a possibility if needed as a starting point. The flat iron building springs to mind although on a different scale.
cacapis, can you start us off be massing 8 floors. I'm having trouble figuring out the scale with the surrounding buildings (and also the metric conversion). I too don't find this lot irregular, basically you have 3-90 degree corners and that makes it easier to work with.
Can you also drop in a KMZ so we can identify with location and perhaps you can describe views n.s.e.w.
thanks and happy designing!

I'll see if I have it saved on some cd when I get home. It seems simple at first, but it's not. Those strange angles, wich by the way weren't 45 deg., complicated the solution a lot.
Anddd, by the way! Where were you when I needed you!!!!
You all deserve bad reps!!! LOL
Answer some questions mate and I'll have a quick crack for you!
1. Required setbacks?
2. Minimum building separation?
3. Maximum height?
4. Unit mix you aim to market? (1,2,3 beds)
5. Parking ratio? Can you achieve parking underground?
6. Is it flat as shown?
7. Maximum site coverage?
8. Anything else you cansider relevant?
Hi Cacapis!
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw your scheme was Barcelona's Cerdá plan and some more recent interpretations / variations of it.
My suggestion would be for you to look, for example, at some of the housing projects for the Villa Olimpica (from 1992 but still interesting in terms of dealing with those "chamfers") and for the Fórum 2004 area, where you can find very interesting solutions for plot geometries similar to the one you've shown us.

I just realized this post originated last summer (my bad), so it's not a "New Posts". Well, how is this project going Or is it dead in the water?

Looks like I need a few more to catch up to the gods... :not worth (bring it on)

OOPS! Same here! Sorry...

Dead as it can be, and fortunately I don't have it with me. My solution was no good anyways.
Void I recomended the same thing to Kristov by pm, particularly the recent project by Carlos Ferrater.
