View Full Version : lethal destruction brainstorm
Hello! My name's Matt I'm a level designer on a shooter videogame and i'm surfing around architect communities to brainstorm with y'all on possible original architecture interactivity that only architect could've thought about.
These brainstorms includes way of going thru a building by other mean than the classical ventilations pipes, and lethal interaction with destructible architecture elements whether by shooting at them or with explosive means (like theater sandbags or huge candelars, or a balcony suspension). I want to bring something new that players aren't used to, if you're interested feel free to respond or contact me!
Thanks for your time!
By the way, if you know of any other forum I could visit it'd be HUGELY apreciated! (can I say hugely?)
Welcome, you definetely found the right place to answer your questions. Check my mate's RYO ARCH-LIFE (http://archlife.skynetblogs.be/) web blog about architecture + fragging... :D Anyway, he'll be around here soon...
Welcome Dimebag!
To start what would be interesting for you to see is examples of architecture in a formal state, like here (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1823), here (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1642&highlight=hadid) or here (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=266&highlight=hadid) . These are just some examples, but if you browse through the forum you'll find endless inspiration.
Also Michel is right RYO is the one who will be able to help you the most.
And last but not least, if you post pictures of what you're working on you might get great feedback and fresh ideas.
Reeeeally thanks a lot guys, I'll be checking that out carefully! You know the business, can't post anything from the game itself but most probably I'll be building a test level today and/or at least some level design pretest that I'm eager to share with you all. See you soon and thanks again!! Really appreciated. :rock on:
Well... what about switches which invert the image? or posterize it? you push a button, and everything goes negative, or warholesque...
What about some areas of the map with gravity changes? You push a button (again) and the direction of gravity changes... (upside down or left side , ...)and the perception of the map RADICALLY changes!!! (imagine yourself walking on the ceiling or the walls). Prince of Persia and Splintercell have a bit of this, but having this change in realtime could be vvvvery impressing...
Of course, with all the physics engine following the change!!!
Thus, if you have to go thu a door on the ceiling, it becomes possible! :rock on: :rock on: :rock on:
Dude, sincerly that's really cool. I always wanted to design twisted manipulated perception of a level, like some level of the matrix path of neo or final level of POP the two thrones, hopefully someday I will!
But you have to know that I design level all realistic so far for today. Classic buildings, hotel, restaurants, towers... see that can get boring pretty fast so will I got time I put on paper ways of suprising the player with cruel ingeniusity of the character.
Since our main character is a brutal violent typical type, it has no feeling whatsoever for his targets. I thought about cutting the rope of an elevator while a bunch of bad guys are using is. Or playing around with electrical breakers so that as soon as a baddie touches say a doorknob or a lightswitch it gets fried or explode. Using architecture as a weapon, with the help of any gadget plausible.
BruceWalker 24-01-2006, 22:26 How about having floor plates on pistons / tracks so they change heights (squish)?
Ryo , you never cease to amaze me. :not worth
A bit off topic but there is a theatre group called Gesher here that uses or tries to use the stage in very innovative fashion . The actors and the sets move horizontally , vertically , makes it a very dynamic . Your idea reminds me of that with a little bit more ,changing the direction of the gravity etc , a bit like in the movie 'The Cube

Do you know Dumb Type? The work of this Kyosho-based collective is focused on technology-meets-contemporarydance and virtual-real mix and deserves a look if they come near you...

oops KyoTo-based :D
congellous 25-01-2006, 11:33 how about diving around it like this dude

congellous 25-01-2006, 14:31 thats cool ryo
but i like the kind of street style of those guys
like breakdancers crossed with cross country gymnast skateboarders, without a scate board
they should be in film
i like the idea of using a realistic building as weapon... i guess that's what dimebag is after.
something like suffocation by CO2 fire extinguish system inside say a highly sensitive mainframe computer room.
booby trapping automatic sliding doors
death by compactus library (being crushed)
legionair disease contracted from air-conditioning cooling towers
construction sites are full of dangers, it's annoying that all the maps with building sites are so safe, the only way to be killed apart from being shot is to fall off the building. there are plenty more potential way to be injured due to poor worksafe practices!
primocordara 25-01-2006, 15:03 There is a veeery bad terror movie of an "inteligent building" that starts killing a group of people that stays locked in at night, just like you mentioned Kevin.

You haven't played Half-Life2 m8 :D :D :D
You can kill your enemies with suspended steel profiles

seen in Jedi Knight, Max Payne 2
booby trapping automatic sliding doors
Half-Life 2 (Ravenholm), FEAR
death by compactus library (being crushed)
Jedi Knight again, Half-Life 2 (urban maps), GTA3
legionair disease contracted from air-conditioning cooling towers
Resident Evil, System Shock...
TRON2.0 was very nice for that
primocordara 25-01-2006, 15:56 I'll have to ask my son Guzman (11) for that... Half-Life, Wolfestein, uff...

Then you can do like Homer Simpson and play against other kids to get good at it and beat him on deathmatchs :D

go on go on go on preeeeeeeeeeeeemo :D
huge thanks to you all, great ideas!! you're really helping me building a better game. I'd really like to have a chat with you, don't hesitate to contact me on boumofficial@hotmail.com
''intelligent building''?
primocordara 26-01-2006, 20:38 " intelligent building"... the idea is that all installations in the building are wired to a central computer that regulates its functioning, to achieve a better efficiency.
In this film, (made during the 80's, I guess the producer had no idea of what an Intelligent building would do!) the building would lock doors, elevators, trap people with the elevator doors and then cut them in half, turn lights on/off, even sprinklers to kill with electricity... etc etc...
It controlled them with the security cameras, something no computer can do ...yet..!

bit like HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey
why not a level set in a winery or distillery or something like that, where you could shoot, or break structural supports and crush the enemies under barrels of booze?
you could throw guys into the brewing tanks and watch them drown too, no?
franjayo 27-01-2006, 00:48 How about:
-a door that swings with extreme strength and velocity and crushes you unless you twist the knob counterclockwise?
-poping up rebar from the walls or floor when wet?
-some sliding tiles in the floors that work like a skateboard?
-shadows that change and confuse you? Or become solid?
primocordara 27-01-2006, 10:18 bit like HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey
Yes ! evidently it was inspired by it...
