This looks like a very interesting competition. I only wish I had noticed it before as the deadline is now so close and I just wont have the time but for you quick workers out there.
Urban Eyrie – A Haven in the city (http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.showhaveninthecity)
An international design competition organised jointly between the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in London and World Architecture News (WAN)
With the density of our cities escalating, finding personal space in urban environments across the world is becoming increasingly difficult. You are invited to use technology and your imagination to create innovative personal havens for enjoying the 21st century city. For the purposes of this competition, a haven can be real or virtual, tiny or expansive, contemplative or dynamic, but it must seek to improve the interaction between individuals and the busy surrounding environment.
Your submission should propose ways to transform existing, or create new such spaces in the immediate physical and social environment, whether in the home, workplace, public realm or transportation. The achievement of such a ‘state’ can use any existing technology but it might also look to imminent and possible future developments.
Your submission must clearly show how you anticipate your eyrie within a real or imagined urban environment. If it is designed for a specific place or culture, you must show how it fits; if it is portable, you should show how it might appear in particular locations.
An international panel will judge the entries. A selection of submissions from this international competition will be displayed within the Royal Academy of Arts in London during March and April 2006 and all entries will be available on WAN. A total of £3000 GBP($5,250 USD)prize money has been allocated and will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. Short listed entrants will be invited to a launch party at the Royal Academy.
Entries are free for WAN subscribers (one per practice), £50.00 ($87.80 USD) for non members and £10.00 ($17.5 USD) for students. Closing date for registration is 20th January 2006. Final date for submission of entries is the 31st January 2006. Submissions will be judged by A3 PDF’s, but exhibited at a larger format.
