John Pawson

John Pawson was born in 1949 in Halifax, Yorkshire. After a period in the family textile business he moved to Japan, where he spent several years teaching English at the business university of Nagoya. Towards the end of his time in Japan, he moved to Tokyo, where he visited the studio of Japanese architect and designer Shiro Kuramata. On his return to England, Pawson enrolled at the Architecture Association in London, leaving to establish his own practice in 1981.

Beginning with the renovation of the London apartment he shared with the art dealer Hester van Royen, the work focused on exploring fundamental problems of space, proportion, light and materials, rather than on developing a set of stylistic mannerisms. Commissions swiftly followed for homes for the writer Bruce Chatwin, opera director Pierre Audi and art collector Doris Lockhart Saatchi, executed in parallel with a number of early art spaces, including Waddington Galleries in London and the PPOW Gallery in New York.

Pawson's subsequent career has spanned a wide variety of projects, from Calvin Klein’s flagship store in Manhattan and airport lounges for Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong to a new Cistercian monastery in Bohemia. In addition to architectural projects, he has designed acollection of domestic objects for the Belgian company 'When Objects Work', a kitchen for Obumex and a range of furniture for Driade.

In 2002 a major exhibition of John Pawson’s work was held at IVAM in Valencia. He was also responsible for the design of the 2002 Venice Architecture Biennale, returning to Venice two years later as one of ten architects whose work was showcased in the British Pavilion.

Current projects include a number of private houses around the world, a condominium on Manhattan’s Gramercy Park for Ian Schrager, a residential tower in San Francisco and the Sackler Crossing for Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens in London. Work on the Cistercian monastery of Our Lady of Novy Dvur in Bohemia is ongoing.

few things are more difficult than designing with just a few elements. everything must be almost perfect. a facade with 50 windows is far easier to design than one with 1 or 2. and so on...

John Pawson has sent us images of his minimalist set design for the world premiere of Chroma, a one-act ballet presented at the Royal Opera House, London, in November.

Pawson’s stage design consisted of a simple, articulated white backdrop with an illuminated rectangular void set into it.

Pawson describes the project as “a design for the stage which uses the architectural motifs of inside and outside, entrance and exit, light and shadow, void and plenitude to create a spatially charged environment, which is explored through the medium of the dancers’ bodies.”

Audi House
Pierre Audi (Opera Director)
Tuscany, Italy
Scheduled completion 2008

The second phase of work in Montemaggio concentrates on the monastery, the centrepiece of the project. The scheme pares away an accumulation of later additions to leave the central core - essentially a single volume with a stair connecting each floor. The interior renovation is based on a vernacular palette of plaster walls and exposed chestnut ceiling timbers, with Florentine pietra serena used for floors, fireplaces and general construction purposes and Roman travertine for basins, tubs, benches and work surfaces.

I don't know the exact detail but I heard there was one LED's pushed flat against the edge of each plank of glass (I don't know for sure).

The con in my opinion is that Kew Gardens closes at 5pm (4pm in Winter) and therefore no-one is there to see the bridge at night!

The El Crouquis also has diagrams of the lighting on the bridge. If you're looking for one book on Pawson it's probably the one to get.
