Hi everyone,

I am still working at BVN and have been on the Mater Hospital project for quite some time now, finally a design opportunity has arisen.

Part of the project involves a link bridge design, Brisbane City Council have voiced there objections towards the current proposal, and so there is now an in-house competition to design a link bridge currently underway. This is my proposal.

My idea revolves around the integration of a spine that runs through the center of the double height link, this allows for much less structure above and below the spine. The lower floor plate hung, and upper simply connected to the spine.

I have then integrated rectangular colonnade that acts as a skin, using the idea of the members being more concentrated near the ends and more open in the middle. The link bridge appearing lighter in the center. At night light would pour out of the middle of the structure.

I also like the idea of peoples movement becoming more interesting with the integration of opaque panels in places (silhouetting) and glass in others.

This is still very conceptual, any helpful feedback would be great.

Cheers Jesse.

This gives a better idea of how it sits over the road.

Reminds me of a project from Zumthor for the Bündner Kunstmuseum (http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/buendner/) . Maybe a Swiss / Aussie mix between Zumthor and Godsell? :D

I really like the design as it is now (well, maybe not in pink), but it's hard to determine how will it look or work. It's not clear wether the colonnade is structural or just a skin.
Maybe the opacity of the glass you name could be arranged in the same fashion as the colonnade to further enhance the center lightness effect. That would also improve privacy near the connected buildings where offices might be.

i think this could be interesting but at the moment i feel as if the structure looks too small, for what you are trying to achieve, will these wrapping portals also have glass in between, and will the window frames change the aesthetic, i'd think that they'dchange the proportions a fair bit.

best of luck with it all..

and keep us posted with whatever happens

ps. what is the prize in the office out of curiousity, the oz tradition of a slab? or recognition from your peers

Not bad - a real design opportunity for a 3rd year student! Well done Jesse.

It didn't strike me as a 'spine' design, but rather inspired by a respiratory device that compresses and expands. Suitable to a hospital no doubt, but that didn't sound like what you were trying to achieve.

Reminds me of David Sheppard's bridge at St Austell, Cornwall, UK.

Is it two stories tall for traffic in both directions or is it just really tall?

Similar to this I posted earlier - Not as refined (your version)

Whatever happened with this project JJ (prior to your departure from BVN)?

JJ is a very good concep star.
but attention to the material support, and the interior light.
for me this bridge is like a bellows from the "consertina" - (music instrument)
I like, keep the work;)
