View Full Version : My own Bungee Cord Chair
Hi Everyone:
The Bungee Cord Chair is my own original design. I have been working on it's develpoment for two years. The idea is to keep the two plywood sides in tension via the high strength bungee cordes. There is no need for glue or mechanical conncetions. The item is designed to ship flat and be asembeled by buyer.
The photo is of an earlier version of the design.
You can see some more images on my web site. of this and other designs.
Enjoy

Sorry the bungees are not %100 perfect.
But is does the job.
Any advice to make the file size smaller?

Archjake 12-12-2005, 04:12 Interesting. I can't see the photo on PPB due to novice permistions, but I saw it on your webpage.
Have you thought about using the waste product, specificly the material cut from under the legs to make a foot rest? What is the cost for bungee cord these days, and how well does it age?
Hi Jake:
Bungee is still cheap 40c per foot. I will get a better price if I order more.
I have made several prototypes and used them heavely for 2 years and they are still in very good shape.
You are right about waste material. Nothing gets wated in my shop. I have design ideas for the leftovers.
You need to improve your novice permision on the forum. Best of luck.

I love the idea but the profile of the sides truely does no justice sorry!!!!!!!
I'd also be concerned that you have a lack of lateral bracing in this chair with no hard fixing.

Wouldn't the ?perspex? spanning sheet provide that lateral bracing? Being a single sheet that is both in the horizontal and vertical plane.
Of course, it would rely completely on high tension, which means a strong person or a good leverage device to assemble.
Does that sound about right?
Of course, that sheet would then mean that a person would be sitting on bungee cords, on a solid sheet - not comfortable in my mind - good idea though.

The perspex sheet would need to run in the vertical plane to stop lateral racking, torsion in the horizontal would not be such a concern IMO. The idea that the cord is use to provide this fixing would require the cord to be stretched to its yield before enough tension would be achieved, mindful aditional tension would be gained (infact an incredible amount eg: a rope pulled tightly and anchored at both ends and supporting a 1kN force at the mid point will generate approx 28kN tension at the anchors - one of those things a climber needs to know!) so this may well serve to achieve this tension.
As I say it is just a concern in theory, in practice gravity, friction and a fat bastard sitting may solve all the issues.
cobberman 14-12-2005, 00:36 Interesting take on a chair. But im wondering, are the bungee ropes far enough appart so they don't pinch my ass?

Indeed.
I want my baby back, baby back, baby back...ribs
Interesting idea
Saw something similar done by UK Plymouth* Architecture students about 35 years ago Their design used a net of elastic rubber stretched over a steel hoop (hula-hoop) inclined on a 45 deg plane on thin legs The net was flat until you sat in it it & then moulded to your shape. It was very comfortable & looked great.
I would think over the 2 year development you have discovered most of the practical problems but (& I don't want to be a wet blanket) My main concern / hesitation is on self assembly of high tension cords & the possibility of whip back causing injury (I'm thinking of your liability as designer / manufacturer.)
*Edit Portsmouth School (not that anyone would be able to correct me)
I think Red has a point here, there was a young guy here (oz) a few years back who when tying his board on the roof racks with an okky strap (bungee cord) the cord snapped hitting him in the throat and it actually killed him.

That's not an isolated incident either. Death by bungee cord - seems ridiculous, but it happens. My brother-in-law almost lost his eye with one of those things.
Guy I was in school with became a draftsman in local steelworks & they used elastic bands to tie down dust sheets on their drawing boards (He lost an eye) & this I had in mind when I raised the point.
