In October 2005 an earthquake measured 7.6 and occurred in northern Pakistan, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The epicentre was approximately 95km north east of Islamabad. The death toll is estimated to be in excess of 86,000+ and 3.3 million people have been displaced and made homeless.

As well as the initial earthquake there have been over 1000 aftershocks. Massive landslides have exacerbated the problem with landslides over 1km wide and 1m deep collapsing into Muzaffarabad.

The real need is not only in relief and recovery but the transitional and long term shelter needs of those displaced - shelter that must be earthquake resistant for the future.

On Friday December 10th Architecture for Humanity launched an open call for ideas for pictorial diagrams of earthquake resistant housing schemes that will help empower communities on the long-term reconstruction effort. These housing schemes are to de developed into cartoon form for a manual that will be distributed throughout Kashmir in the spring. It is free to enter and is open for anyone. Ideas are due by January 20th 2006.

The criteria and brief was developed by Arup engineers alongside a number of regionally based architects, engineers and government officials in Pakistan. the project was inspired by the work of Fred Cuny in the 1976 Guatemala Earthquake.

Please note: this is a very short competition but the need is great as winter has decended on the mountainous region of Kashmir.
