View Full Version : The Seoul Performing Art Center Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:04 Competition lost as usual. We do not have a lot of time to work further our proposition (but it was just an idea competition). Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:08 Made with SketchUp 4 & the new Artlantis Radiosity Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:09 - Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:12 View to the island Submission to the competition by Christophe Hebert, architect & Philippe Greslé (coast study engineer) Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:13 Participation to the international contest of ideas for the Center of the Performing arts in Seoul - July 2005 The contest relates to the realization of ' a concert hall and a room of opera comprising 1500 places respectively. The site is characterized by a singular identity and strong constraints. It acts of an island artificial, crossed by a motorway, surrounded of bridges and ways of railroad. We did not wish to compete with the opera of Sydney and to seek spectacular forms. We are interested instead of the spectacle which we try to reveal by simple acts of construction. It is a project disencumbered of any architectural style, a pure installation. Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:15 The spectacle brings us in another world. We cover a great part of the artificial island and the motorway which cuts it into two, by a concrete platform (quite as artificial). This concrete platform which covers the motorway, the carparks, the essence of the establishment, is a pond which reflects the sky. This mirror makes disappear the motorway as by magic, by illusion. The concrete platform is one of the answers to the sound harmful effects which affect the site. We surround only the western part of the island of a lattice of bamboos. The island is on the scale of the program. The lattice will be with the wire of time a support of vegetalisation by sedimentation and the ground contribution. It has as a role to define a preserved place, isolated. It makes echo with the remote mountains and answers the desire to underline the limits of the island. This is a scenic relation with water. It settles the question of the monumental expression, of the institutional signal, without yielding to a formal higher bid. It is a limit, a fence, an enclosure which is where it must be it. Behind this translucent skin the cage of scene appears which overhangs the scene of the opera. This volume lights the evenings of representation and constitutes the only visible part of the imposing equipment. We had at the head of the images of the festival of the lanterns in Seoul. Between the lattice of bamboos and the volume of the cage of scene, is organized an interval, an intermediate space in reference to the cultural notion of space in Asia. In this space where the basin is prolonged, there is no human presence. Christophe Hébert 05-08-2005, 17:16 At the other side, a panoramic view opens on this place, since the hearth installed on water. Mechanical ramps of 4% make it possible to reach under the basin towards one of the two performance rooms. The hearth also offers sights on the rumours of the city, with crossed motorway, 6 meters lower. Since the hearth, the level of water on a delimited zone of the basin drops and disappears to open an access on the external amphitheatre. This universe, this "elsewhere" appears behind a limit whose translucent aspect invites to a strong desire. The sleeping raising sun and sunlight passes through the lattice of bamboos, it reveals the time which passes by the modification of the aspect of the play of shade according to the crossing light. The bamboo is the natural symbol of plenitude. digdoi 05-08-2005, 18:43 Nice images Cristophe. I really like the look of your project but I can't understand exactly how it works. I know it's an ideas competition but could you explain more about the requirements, program, etc? Maybe some plans (a section would be great). :wondering Thank you very much for posting. bakbek 05-08-2005, 18:50 Please do post some drawings.. plans, elevations, section MICHEL 05-08-2005, 18:50 Agree, images look really great but a section would help to understand the inner functionnality of the scheme. Hope to see some more! MICHEL 05-08-2005, 18:55 Btw Christophe, as you appear to be a render king, would be nice if you give this forum some tips and tricks to achieve such beautifull shots. A new sub-forum called RENDERERS (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15) is available to discuss all topics related to rendering softwares. Please welcome moderator bakbek who's particulary in charge of it :rock on: Brian T 05-08-2005, 19:36 I agree that it's a little tough to understand whats going on. On the other hand the images are very compelling!! Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:46 Ok, more drawings. There were not program about this competition, only problems description about the site and scenic description about they want : 1500 seats opera house, 1500 seats concert hall, and 5 times opera scene as scenic dispositions Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:48 existing Highway connection Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:49 Existing Highway Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:51 Highway connection : designed for car and bus Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:52 Site Plan Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 13:55 Plan showing car park & Scenic installation, below the concrete plateform that cover a part of the site & the Highway. At this level, car park cover the highway too Christophe Hébert 07-08-2005, 14:02 Noise problems strategy Essentially heavy concrete solution : Opera walls & concrete plateform that cover the site & the highway. The concrete plateform is a pond that reflect sky, bamboos and scenic installation above the opera scene. There is also trap sound into the double translucide wall of the scenic installation above the opera scene. This installation is illuminated at performing evenings primocordara 09-08-2005, 18:47 Very good presentantion and rederings. You do have a sond problem with this highway coming through the structure. There is a TV studio in Buenos Aires next to a highway , a very good proyect IMHO. They had to isolate the filming studios with phneumatic bases and vacum chambers to avoid the ground vibrations. Christophe Hébert 09-08-2005, 23:13 Hi Thanks. I think it's not so diffucult. I have to work with discontinuated structures and heavy concrete walls. Under the highway I may use noise reduction material. wegofaster 10-08-2005, 05:52 great renderings! Looks like billboard material. :) Christophe Hébert 10-08-2005, 07:31 Thank you PeterE 26-08-2005, 06:18 Christophe, No movie of this project? Movies of your previous competitions really explained the ideas well. :not worth ryo 14-10-2005, 23:31 Christophen did you do other competitions recently? digdoi 14-10-2005, 23:58 I know he did the WTC Memorial Competition (http://www.wtcsitememorial.org/ent/entI=409530.html) THREAD (http://www.pushpullbar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485) ;) |
