hi there,

I'm in my second bachelor-year Eng.-Architect and I need to cover part of playground of an existing elementary school.
There is already a part covered, as can be seen in the picture.
My idea was, in plan, to 'close' the existing U-shaped plan. That way, the circulation cycle is closed, and the new covered part can be accessed from both sides of the existing school. (the circulation zone is marked on the plan)

Now, there is a sports field that's part of the school too.
I wanted to make a link between the playground and the field.
To make a parapet between the two, I'd make a long bench...
this bench would 'continue' in the lower level (the field, about 1.80m lower).
(see picture)

now the problem is, how to cover this?
I had an idea for the long circulation zone on the 0.0 level (playground) (see picture). there, I'd like to have as few columns as possible....
so it'd be something like this:
http://www.bois-construction.org/realisation_du_mois.php

Nevertheless, the total image needs to be in harmony with the existing school . This means, both shape en scale need to be in proportion to the existing building. For example, a large 'tent'-like structure wouldn't be such a good idea.
That's the reason I wanted to keep the shape clear and simple.

The problem is to make the link with the sports field.
If I'd just continue at the height the upper part is covered, the total height underneath the cover at the field would be about 4-5m, and you would lose the feeling of 'scale' when sitting on the benches below....
Any one an idea how I can make this transition from upper to lower part, keeping in mind the total image needs to be simple and clear...?

Thanks a lot

ps: the stairs on the left side are existing
the one to make the transition to the sportsfield are mine

Why are you using an existing structure system? Why not develop your own design?
If it's a university work I think you're supposed to create something right? :wondering

it was just one idea...
Just looking for inspiration
I'm looking for a structure that is quite light, fits right in with the existing building,....
So I need something with nog too much columns on the long side of the rectangle.... This seemed a good example for me.
Do you have other suggestions????

I really need help, we did not learn a lot yet about structural systems

it MUST be a timber construction

thanks
