View Full Version : [London] Wagamama Soho - David Chipperfield
This was the second of the Wagamama noodle chain, designed by David Chipperfield in 1995. A place where there is actually semi-affordable food in London.
Address: 10A Lexington Street, Soho, London
View from street.
from the street, one can see the dining space below and yet the upstairs part is obscured by translucent glass
Upon entry, one is to squeeze pass the kitchen where food is being prepared.
I think Chipperfield here is partially inspired by urban Chinese noodle houses where there is a narrow shopfront and half of which is occupied by a kitchen that's glazed. In order to dine, one must squeeze pass the kitchen and see the food before entering into the dining area where you sometimes have to share tables with other diners.
stair detail (though it has aged a lot since I first visited back in 1997, these were taken start of 2005, so 10 years old)
as seen from the stair landing
dining space with big tables and benches for sharing.
did you end up going JP?
been trying to find a pic of what i am talking about, here is the only shot i have of that type of restaurant/eatery in hongkong....
here a congee shop's kitchen, the glass in the background is the street and i am standing in the corridor that leads to the dining area

I remember you telling me about this when I was going to London. I never actually found it till you posted these images. I was actually there in fact, and was drawn to it by its design. I was not aware this was the one you were referring to.
Thanks for posting this.
Are you including directions, because it is worth seeing?

That is the Israeli imitation of the Wagamama, the concept is imitated not the layout.
Same long communal tables, See thru kitchen, and as always:
The source looks WAY better. :not worth
[check out the 360 panorama on the lower right corner in case you only see jibrish/Hebrew]

I was lucky enough to see David Chipperfield's Lecture when he was here in Brisbane.
His work on restoring wartime buildings was very interesting. Very nice buildings.
I'm getting hungry looking at these photos. I never heard of David Chipperfield until I read the thread about your photos being used Swank-E, but I do like his work. Thanks for posting the photos Swank-E.

Missed this thread until now - Can't read Hebrew but this looks like the noodle bar in Herzeliya (just north of Tel Aviv) - I've been there. Great noodles and stylee design. I've got one of the place-mats with the framed on my wall. :)
