a cool way to visit Valencia: bici-metro
The valencia metro posts 14 bicycle road maps for visiting the city.
You take the metro with the bike, and ride from the indicated metro station.

The most interesting for architects is Nº 2 -viejo cauce del Turia "old river basin ride", check it out:

You contribute so much to this forum that I sometimes find myself wondering when you find time to do your work.

The forum is better for it though - we anglo saxons need to be shown that there is a whole world of good architecture out there that doesn't revolve around us.

Ja ja really? I've been rather busy these days so I haven't been around so frequently.
I enjoy having PB on while working, while I self-practition!
I also try to find references not available on the main Architecture "Star System", this forum has proven great for that!

BTW I am a bit disorganized so I kind of keep Swank-e on his nerves! Sory Kevin!

Valencia is on the map.

It begs the question: Where are they getting all the money to build these fabulous buildings they apparently could not afford before? I am sure there is a story here.

AS form the Bilbao experience, they realized good architecture puts post-industrial cities on the map again.
The change into the Euro meant low interest rates for investors in spain, and real estate in booming, many say its a balloon soon to burst.
The average Spanish family pays more than 50% of their income in mortgages for the home, the house it the mountains, the apartment at the beach, etc.
Construction is striving and public buildings bring up the real estate value of the city and its surroundings.
I hear many success stories from relatives and people there who started paying for an apartment 5-7 years ago (with a 15 year loan) and now its worth the double!

And Spain is very generous when it comes to giving young paractices a commission for projects. Which does the architecture-scene a lot of good. :rock on:

Very true! I understand France has a simmilar system too, wereby public buildings have to be made by local architects in restricted competitions.

Shame a lot of cities in the UK aren't as forward thinking.:bang head :bang head Admittedly a few are beginning to do this. (Liverpool, Manchester.)

Bristol though is bereft of outstanding new architecture and is just building more shit. What it really needs is a few contemporary cultural icons to join all the old Brunel stuff and really put it on the map. Having said that Lab Architecture are hopefully going to refurb the industrial museum.

Wow, what's LAB doing? any pics?

Only this from their site.

the new museum of bristol, is expected to open its doors to the public in 2009, and will tell the unique story of bristol and its people. using bristol's outstanding collections as well as the stories of local people, the museum will illustrate the city's role as one of the uk's great seaports, and the unique qualities of the city and the people who live there. the development of the museum of bristol will complete the regeneration of the city's historic docks. the industrial museum is housed within the cargo sheds built in 1951. the sheds and the wharf are situated on were operational until 1974 and survive largely intact today.in 1977, the site was taken over by the city?s museums service and today the industrial museum is one of the most popular cultural attractions in bristol. the new museum will build on this to provide the city with a new focus for its history.

Yep, that's the one. Lot's of the locals aren't keen. :bang head

Considering Bristol sees itself as a forward thinking council it's a bit sad. They should look at what the Guggenheim did for Bilbao.
