Snøhetta in Ras Al-Khaimah

Sheik Saud and Rakeen of Ras Al-Khaimah has appointed the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta the prestigious task of creating an iconic gateway building for the new capital city of Ras Al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.

The approx. 300,000 m2 complex will contain a Congress Center, Exhibition Halls, Shopping Center, 5+ Star Hotel, 5 Star Hotel, and a 4 Star Hotel.

*Included here as news as we have just received the contract and work will commence on schematic design this week. Will supplement with more info, and try to answer questions as they come. Been wanting to share this one for a while, but had to wait until it went public.

Some of the hotels are arranged around large garden oasises with public gardens below, and more private rooftop gardens along the top rim.

Crumply paper architecture. Eat your heart out Mr Gehry....what happened to doing things for a reason? What happened to making things a certain way because they work better rather than making things a certain way because its a nice formal game?

What about beauty, isn't that what we do? When is that not a good enough reason? We all play the formal "game". That is why we are not called engineers.

I really like the project. Do you have any shots that are from a human perspective. There is currently a lot of design consideration to what is effectively the roof, what can Joe pedestrian expect?

Well for one thing this is not beautiful and even if it were it would be no more beautiful than something else that is trivial and shallow. Its a Barbiebuilding in a Barbiebuilding world. I dont know about you mate, but i try very hard not to be a drawing board stylist. If your objective is making beautiful objects then you arent making architecture you are making jewllery. Architecture is so much more than something visual, its about context and place and organisation and structure and function. If you make something beautiful you make it out of that sort of thing and you will have a pretty object that has meaning and not just a pretty object that could be on a site in any city or even not on a site at all....
