[design] Stairs, stairs, stairs
A month ago Ronen statrted making me think about stairs. Someone had rendered and image with treads attached to the wall with handrails and the discussion that ensued revolved around saftey issues versus aesthetics.
I thought it would be interesting to have a thread illustrating different stair designs, so I started snagging some images when I would come across them. Here are a few to start. This first one I really like, although it may be a deathtrap and a code nightmare. |

Here's a detail of a hand rail. Make sure to keep plenty of bandages in the medicine chest for this one. I see an amputation in the future.

Interesting sculptural effect here. Interesting twelve inch risers too at a 60 degree angle.

I just had to revise a rail today to eliminate a "ladder". How exquisitely frustrating to see these beautifully wrought stairs that are completely impossible with the IRC.

I see SO many slick staircases in UK architectural journals which cannot possibly comply with UK regs. I don’t know how they get away with it! Heres one that takes on a different approach... designed by Gregory Phillips for his own home apparently. Each tread provides storage 4 clothes, books n CDs

A staircase is an architecture project for itself. It's probably one of the things that give me the most pleasure to design. Structure, dimensionning, finishing, design... staircases cover the whole range of architecture problems.
