[USA] Antoine Predock
Antoine Predock
An artist himself, Antoine Predock has a keen understanding of Tacoma Art Museum’s mission to connect people through art. His vision for the new building maximized that connection. The design allows visitors to interact with art and the Puget Sound landscape as they move through the building. Tacoma Art Museum is Predock’s first contribution to Northwest architecture. The design itself—as well as many of its architectural elements such as the open-air interior stone garden—offers a uniquely northwest experience of space. As with all of his work, Predock intends for the building to relate to its environment rather than inflict a style upon it. Often cited as one of the top architects in the country, the Albuquerque, N.M. resident designed the new San Diego Padres Stadium, the Austin City Hall in Texas, Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the Las Vegas Central Library and Discovery Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, Fla., the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix and the Nelson Fine Arts Center at Arizona State University in Tempe. Predock has won many awards for his work, including two National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architecture (AIA), the Gran Premio Internacional de Arquitectura de Buenos Aires and the Rome Prize of the American Academy in Rome. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Columbia University. While a student at Columbia, he studied painting with Elaine DeKooning and served as co-director of a modern dance company. Predock has offices in Albuquerque and Los Angeles. |

Tacoma Art Museum
Tacoma, Washington 1997/2003 Located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Hood Street, the Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) is a critical link connecting the core of the Downtown district with the History Museum and Union Station and the art and commercial loop of the Thea Foss Waterway development. Designed to provide an engaging built edge along Pacific Avenue while providing focused pedestrian views towards Mt. Rainer, the proposed Museum design mediates the vehicular scale of the I-705 freeway with the pedestrian scale of the proposed arts loop created by Pacific Avenue, Hood Street, the Thea Foss promenade and the Chihuly bridge. Oriented on the site to accommodate the possible future expansion of the existing courthouse, the footprint of the future courthouse has been designed as surface garden parking. Until such time as the Courts choose to implement the proposed expansion, this surface garden parking area will provide a visual buffer between I-705 and the Museum. Preliminary site massing has explored the slope of the site to the East of Pacific Avenue. By pulling the edge of the building away from the street edge and creating a fissure, bridges could span over the perimeter fissure, enticing one to sectionally experience the building while providing choreographed vignettes into the inner working of the Museum. Apertures are cut into this fissure wall orienting the pedestrian to views of Mt. Rainer, the Museum lobby, the educational component of the Museum program, and other critical programmatic elements of the building. Hierarchically organized around the different ends for views and the critical nature of light in a Museum, the storage and service elements of the building are located at the lower level of the building, the public functions and galleries are located at street level, while the administrative functions are located at the upper level. In association with Executive Architect Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects. |

Great News! I hadn't heard that yet.
I have visited his studio twice - once when I was touring his buildings in New Mexico on my own and the second time was when I interviewed for a position in the firm. Alas, 911 had just accured and they wanted me, but had too many people for the work load that the time. I have seen/toured: Tacoma Art Museum http://dehon.org/antoine/sam_sterling/TacomaArtMuseum/ Spenser Theater in Riadoso Turtle Creek house (Bird house) in Dallas Venice House Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque La Luz Condos Las Vegas Library and Children's Museum Cal Poly in Pomona Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos, NM Tampa Museum of Science and Industry Also - have seen/met him at a AIA lecture a few years back. He also has another project here in Dallas that I haven't seen if it has been constructed or not at the University of Dallas - I just remember the press for it when it was announced - send the clippings to the firm so they would have them. Also - I need to make it down to Austin to check out the City Hall. Way to go!
